Blue Man Falling

I was waiting for a friend outside WH Smith at Waverley station last night, and spotted what looked like a Hurricane on the front of a book. Intrigued, I picked it up….

“Blue Man Falling” by Frank Barnard.

Synopsis: In September 1939, World War Two is declared and Europe holds its breath. When will the Third Reich strike west across France and the Low Countries? For RAF fighter pilots patrolling the Franco-German border it is a bizarre time: one moment they are chasing an elusive Luftwaffe, the next ordering champagne in Paris. Then, in May 1940, Hitler launches Blitzkrieg and the Hurricane squadrons find themselves engulfed in battle. From the cockpit of a Hurricane fighter plane to the louche salons of Parisian society, Blue Man Falling follows the fortunes of two RAF pilots, an Englishman, Kit Curtis, and an American, Ossie Wolf, during the Battle of France 1939-40. Capturing the startling contradictions of a time when people were at their best and their worst, it brings to life the exhilaration and fear of aerial warfare with astonishing power and narrative skill. Above all, it lays bare the meaning of war, and the selflessness of those prepared to fight until the end.

Sounded quite good to me, but I didn’t buy it last night in case I left it in the pub! Will be picking it up later today, though….

Funny that this thread should have been resurrected now as I only finished reading it a couple of months ago. My immediate thought was that I would like to see a sequel to it and Voila there it is. II enjoyed reading it and haven’t given it away as I will re-read it before starting on the sequel to refresh my memory. Also still waiting for the sequel to Tuesday’s child and Alex Kimbell’s third book. At least with the latter I’ll hopefully get notification of its proposed publication date as I am in occasional contact with Alex.(both ex squaddies, even if he was a Rupert. I won’t hold that against him:) )

I’ve not managed to get all the way through it, for various reasons, but what I have read was quite entertaining.

Dunno where the hell the book is now, though! Probably somewhere in the new flat…

Thread resurrectus from Aug 2006!

Given the above thread didn’t get very far, forumites should have had a chance to read Blue Man Falling by now. How did you rate it?

I have some free time now for a few weeks and BMF popped up literally out of the blue as a possible one to read.
