For those of you who have ever dreamed, here is a real Fantasy Island opportunity…
Program allows pilots to fly the Me-262 in the skies against its historic foe, the B-17 and B-24.
The Collings Foundation is pleased to announce, for the first time in history, the opportunity for private individuals to fly the legendary Messerschmitt Me-262. This is a once in a lifetime chance for pilots to fully experience the aircraft that made history as the first jet fighter and one of the most important aircraft of WWII. From the best possible vantage point, the cockpit, participants will take to the skies in this legendary aircraft!
For more information on this historic opportunity visit http://www.warbirdrecovery.com. Yes, it is possible!

Introductory ride a possibility…
After we displayed at the NBAA show in Florida and introduced the Me262 ride program, the idea of an shorter, introductory ride is now being considered. The article in Air & Space on the 262 sparked some strong interest also, so a tax deductible donation of $10K to the Collings Foundation with a ride benefit in the 262 is a real possibility. Rides will happen in Seattle at Legend Flyers… www.warbirdrecovery.com for more information and let us know your thoughts. Thanks!

If, we are going to dream a little maybe a one on one with a Me-262 and P-80? Well, I don’t know if any Shooting Stars are currently flying? Yet, surely many two seat T-33’s are…………. That would be much more worth while…………… ๐

The battles were bloody and the pilots and crew on both sides were heros .
Yes they were. :thumbsup)

The head on’s also blew the Tail gunner’s right out of the Tail, and killed a few on the way there though the plane’s body!

Think another tactic was to go high and dive through the formation, shooting as you go,diving away to reclimb and reposition for another attack. It all sounds good in theory but when there are groups of P51,s hanging about it was get in quick, take the shot and skidoo outa there before the bloodthirsty Merlins are on your tail. The Zestorers were primarily used to try and break up the formations. The fighters being used to pick off stragglers as they tried to limp home. The head on approach resulted in the bigger danger to bomber crews as a few cannon rounds in the cockpit area resulted in a pretty high chance of success of downing bomber.Remember with a 30mm it only took two to three hits to do serious damage to a B17.The battles were bloody and the pilots and crew on both sides were heros .

good info for the dude’s who have no clue’s!
Ah!, Only the Gnome know’s ๐
Thank’s guy’s,
Musta been real fun being one of those Sturmo armoured 190 pilot’s!!!!!!!
I try it in a Hurra,
On me B of B game, over London, and just try and formate, right in the middle of a heap of He 111’s, just hover behind each in turn hammering them :dev2: ๐ (on un limited ammo),
Of course all the time the Hurra’s getting peppered with bullet’s,
I usually bail after the windscreen’s stuffed, and I can not see to well ๐ฎ , the wing’s are full of hole’s, and she fly’s drunk ๐ .
And the donk’s blowing black smoke running real rough, and flame’s are creeping in to the cockpit floor! :dev2:
Some time’s I get carried away in the killing feast, leave it a bit long, and when I bail, his strap’s are burt through, and he doe’s this screaming swan dive below, it’s a pissser ๐ .
But it seem’s the Sturmo 190’s were the fat heavy girl running up hill, and became very easy meat, for the bomber escort fighter’s!
Ciao! Roll on!

And what about the Zerstorers? What were their tactics?
From what I recall, their (e.g. Me110, 210, 410) main tactic was to sit behind the formations out of range of the bombers’ 50 cals and to hit them (repeatedly) with their longer range 20mm, 30mm, rockets, etc.
However, some of you might recall the famous photo of the Me410 flying past the wing-tip of, and in the same direction as, the 388th BG’s B17 “Lady Godiva” during the famous 12th of May 1944 mission to Brux.
Why that 410 would have had to come in so close I don’t know as I would have thought that it would be playing into the hands of the B17s’ gunners?
However, I do recall that “Lady Godiva’s” pilot, Manuel Head, always said that the photographer should have had a gun in his hand and not a bloody camera! ๐

TACTICS
Trying to remember clearly here what I’ve read in numerous sources. IIRC there were 3 basic attack techniques used by the Luftwaffe against the B17/24 formations.
Head on … hit and run … used by the majority of 109 and 190 day fighter staffeln … throttled back, very high closure speed all the same, very short aiming/firing window (only a second or two) requiring very high accuracy, then throttle open and dive away (to come around again)
From the rear by the sturm 190s, heavily armoured, slow closure speed, you took a lot of hits but what the hell, the idea was to close, deliver as many cannon sheels as possible and take out one bomber = success. So what if the 190’s stuffed.
From the rear by the 262s, a shallow dive from well above and behind, pull up, sight and let fly, then what? I don’t recall. Power up through the formation or break away and down? Safety was the speed of movement (ie. difficulty of a gunner getting a good bead on a 262).
And what about the Zerstorers? What were their tactics?

Anyone do a mission or what!
What’s tango been up to of late, and do we have yet another new 262 in the Air yet!??

I think I just may take the 262 ride, instead of the old slow bus.
” Gut Nacht ” all.
watch out for the Schpitfeuer’s

Which of the Aeroplane’s would you like to fly in.

Re:
Maybe the pessimist in me sees the worst,a new plane, gung ho show off and BOOM,theres no need for passes on a bomber,as Qldspitty says “It would be all too easy too misjudge an approach at the speeds they did in WW2 and end up in a nasty place”
Even if the speeds are reduced, two planes heading together at 200 mph each is a split second in time.
I would figure with an experianced pilot in one seat and a customer in the other it would similar to flying lessons or driving lessons – if there was a problem the instructor would take over.

Could make some big cash for them I reckon.
Would any EU formite’s like a run at it?
Ciao, I must crash now, the M.S. is playing up some, and I’m knackered ๐ฎ .

I can see Walter Mitty now lining up the B-17 in his sights “TA-POKITA-POKITA-POKITA!”
I think he has a little problem at ‘Fairoaks’ to sort out first.

I don’t see any risk in a head-on attack with an Me 262 on a B-24… surely the average pilot can deal with such closure speeds! ๐ฎ
Would be amazing experience though! ๐
