Hardly wasted, they have done 40 years service. There comes a time when it makes more sense to use them as saucepans. Not every airframe can or indeed should make it into preservation.

to take airworthy a/c or at least ones that can be run up, and then melt them down is a waste. Be it ground instruction, static display or saving lives or retired in a museum its better than breaking them up.
