On a related note, there were plans for a memorial on the Swan in Perth featuring a Catalina. I was under the impression that the Cat in question was currently in store at the old railway workshops at Midland, but things seem to have gone quiet.Is anyone in the know aware of what is currently happening with this project?

I understand this PBY-5A is to put on permanent display at the RAAF Association Museum at Bull Creek and the aircraft display is being reorganised to make space for it.

The XXXXXXX Vengeance is at Wangaratta with Murray Griffith’s Precision Aerospace, and is XXXXXXXX stored (as part of a multi-aircraft batch) and will be rebuilt, in due course, to airworthy condition. There is a xxxx airfield for the happy day; but it’ll be some time away yet.

Don’t know about the sale to the RAFM being blocked, if they came up with enough cash I’m sure they could have one – that’s not likely though.

I’m pretty sure that the Catalina planned for the Perth memorial was shipped in from the states “cocooned” (with the spray-on plastic coating) to protect it on its sea voyage, which would suggest that it had already been restored stateside.

I’m miffed that I appear to have missed the Vengeance – never seen one before.

The Vengeance fuselage was there in 2002 when I visited, and the collection only broke up when sold off.

I last visited Whaleworld in 1996, and clearly remember the Catalina and the Kingfisher (and was most impressed with this rarity, though I’m even more impressed it’ll fly again one day), but can’t remember the Vengeance. Did this leave before then?

The Camden Museum aircraft Mk.I, A27-99 (EZ999) is complete, and I believe the wings are kept separately for storage reasons. Whaleworld had a large number of bits of Vengeances, most included in a partial semi-complete restoration. Precision acquired all the Whaleworld bits, plus various other parts from around Australia with a view to an as yet unstarted batch rebuild.

Currently there is one complete Vengeance in the world, the Camden machine; and there is the potential for two or perhaps more rebuilt in the future. Here’s hoping!

Think there was a much rarer Vengeance there too……. thought i heard RAFM was after it but any potential sale was blocked due to its historic value to Oz?
