For all you RAF Wethersfield fans, and I know that there are a few of you about, I must tell you about an ongoing incident in connection with the base.
At 7:30 this morning a very large Dutch low loader with a very peculiar looking piece of kit on the back attempted to cross the single track, hump back bridge down on our village green.
While crossing, he turned the back wheels on the trailer which locked sideways and refused to budge. He tried to move it by putting wooden blocks under the trailer and dragging it, but nothing happened.
Eventually one policeman arrived to direct traffic away on one side of the bridge whilst myself and a neighbour directed traffic on the other side, for those who don’t know, to get from one side of the village to the other without the use of this bridge is a round trip of several miles.
Eventually they dropped the trailer and got a local tractor to tow off the strange machine.
At this point I noticed that it had an MOD registration plate and on closer examination realised that it was a six line glider towing winch, bound for Wethersfield, confirmed to me by the bloke who eventually arrived from Wethersfield in the yellow RAF Landrover at about 10:00.
Eventually they tried to shift it by putting wooden blocks under the empty trailer and dragging it inch by inch off the bridge.
By this time, the tourists had begun to arrive and the famous Finchingfield vista across the village green consisted of a revving low loader, complete with swearing Dutchmen, though happy to recieve a constant supply of cold drinks from our gorgeous girls at the adjacent hairdressers, the massive traffic jams, a line of frustrated school buses, ( the kids were sent home, though mine didn’t get away with it), and this bloody great RAF glider winch parked halfway up the hill behind a farm tractor, I had to smile.
At this point, I had to go and do a survey at B Stortford, nice weather for that, phew. On return at 13:00, the trailer had been dragged off the bridge but the whole contraption is slewed across the Haverhill Road and awaiting another trailer to take it away.
The new glider winch has been delivered to Wethersfield by farm tractor, typical MOD, who were noticeable by their absence, perhaps I should send them a bill for my time in directing traffic to help them out of a fix.
This wouldn’t have happened in the old days, what, the Yanks would have sorted it out in 10 minutes, I’m quite intrigued to know why what looked like a British built glider winch was being delivered from Holland, though it could have been a refurb, perhaps more fun and games this afternoon.
Incidentally my computer is still not working properly, we’ve attempted every thing possible to correct it but to no avail. For those of you with a computer affected by a power cut, make no attempt at an insurance claim based on that, they only cover food in the freezer, just make out that you accidentally dropped it and you’ll be OK, useless, useless, b#######.
