Exhaust pipes??

I’ve been meaning to ask this question for a while, ever since seeing a photo, tail-on, of an Eagle Squadron Hurricane fitted with the individual exhaust set-up (as seen on the BBMF Hurricanes, for instance).

Having never seen any other wartime shots of a Hurricane like this, I thought it was a bit strange, although I’ve seen numerous shots of Spitfire Vs fitted as such (although later in the war).

Was this a common occurence with Hurris? The caption to the photo does not state anything special about the aircraft, other than that it was flown by this particular Eagle pilot (whose name and unit I can’t recall, and I now cannot find the book!).

Don’t forget this well known Hurri I with multiple exhaust stacks. Could be the guy flying the Eagle Squadron bird had some pull too and figured out the multiple stacks gave it a bit more speed?
