Has anyone heard about the two Hurricanes in Loch Leven in Scotland?

Rekindle this thread
Hello all.
I was interested to read this thread regarding the Hurricanes that crashed in Loch leven. I live to the East side of the loch and happened to ask an old chap if he knew anything about this. Straight away he sad yes but descibed a different crash that happened at the side of the loch near Grahamstone farm around 1941 and did actually see the wreckage. He did not recall the other two as he was away in the services in 1943.
I would be interested to know if there is any record of this earlier crash and if there has been any more info gathered regarding the two that went into the loch.
Cheers

Hi Anne
As you correctly point out, it is a wargrave so out of bounds – very little remains anyway – hopefully it will be left alone.
Cheers
If you want to go diving on a Whitley how about P5009 in Loch Enoch. Bit of a slog to get to and don’t get any ideas about recovering it as it’s protected as a war grave.

Loch diving
You could always ask. I think he would jump at it really as he will be in Scotland over the next few weeks looking at another Loch.
Ali
Surely that is ‘jump in’ rather than ‘jump at? (I’ll get my coat!) :diablo:

The LOch Enoch Whitley affair was a huge mess.I would advise anyone to keep well away from this site because they could easily get into all sorts of aggro from the same individuals who stirred up a hornets nest to get restrictions made on the site.
There is one in Loch Ryan and also one in Loch Fyne. I have seen a video of the one in Loch Fyne and it still looks like and aircraft.

Sure – I could ask him. Do you think he has the time? He always seems to be so busy.
If he has the time then that would be great.
Cheers

Have you thought of asking Steve to go. I’m sure he would love to go up and do some video. He has this great big Hi Def camera with housing and a massive light system.

That’s fine Allison, there is no rush! I will not be able to dive as I am just far too busy these days unfortunately with both Whitley and job matters.
I can put any diver who is interested in going down there in touch with a local diver who can take you out ete. I’ll gladly stump up the cash for the dive in exchange for some piccies.

Am currently moving house at the moment. Too far away from the coast in Yorkshire so am moving to West Wales so not available for a few weeks.

That’s what I have heard Tom. The Kinloss Aviation Society dug up an American radial engine from the beach there sometime in the 1970s – that is the only thing I have ever heard of coming out of the immediate area.
That said, sometimes you have to really have to look for these things…
In addition to my last. A friend windsurfs there and he tells me that even with the tide fully in you can stand on the bottom in most places and I have been there regularly for the last four years and there is no sign of anything at low tide. If anything was left you would see it at low tide.

There is nothing left in Findhorn Bay. The tide goes all the way out leaving mud flats and sand which is easily accessible. Everything that ditched there was recovered.

Hi Allison
Most of the Whitleys that went into Findhorn bay were recovered – I have the ditching reports for a lot of them. The others not mentioned in the reprots were probably also recovered! Certainly none of my spies in the area have ever found anything…
There is a ‘Sunderland’ in approx 40m off Findhorn. I wonder if it is a Whitley.
Fancy diving it for me and taking a few pics? I’ll be your pal forever…
Take care on the ups and downs

You only want access to my rib and camera don’t you? 🙂
Sure. Your sonar or mine?
Will have to bring someone else along to drive the boat. Do you use a twinset? Nitrox? etc etc

I have found the details of a few Whitleys that went into Findhorn Bay and was wondering if they were recovered.

Ali,
According to the Shorter Oxford Dictionary (1984 ed):
“Midshipman…In the navy, a rank intermediate between that of naval cadet and that of sub-Lieutenant…”
“Warrant Officer…An officer of the army or navy who holds office by warrant, as dist. from a commissioned officer…”

Paul,
Stark was posted to the AFU on 8 Feb 43. His commission is dated 15 Feb 43 but doubtless was still being processed at the time of his fatal accident.
Errol
I am a keen reader of the history of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars and in those days a Midshipman was classed as a Warrant Officer. I thought that today a Midshipman already had a commission even though a temporary one. Correct me if I’m wrong here.

Steve P
I noticed that as well from the Accident Report – The CWGC has him down as Sub-Lieutenant (A)
I will confirm with Errol Martyn
