Thanks for the input chaps, the picture had been sold for £150.00 before I got there.

There was also a small water colour of a Defiant in night fighter colours, with at least 25 signatures, they wanted £100 for that.

I believe “Sgt J_____” may be Sgt Bernard James Jennings and “Uncle Sam” could be PO Phillip Howard Leckrone. The picture in Kenneth Wynn’s “Men of the Battle of Britain” looks like Leckrone and he was American, but it records him as being with 616 Squadron.

The picture appears in the ” B J ELLAN” (Brian Lane) book “Spitfire!” of 1942.

The picture is captioned Sgt J____, Author, “Flash”, “Grumpy”, F/Lt Mac, “Rangy”, S/L B____, “Frankie” (on wing) and “Uncle Sam”.

I guess if anyone has the Diplip Sarkar book “19 Squadron” he probably names them fully as I believe it contains the Brian Lane book too.

Sorry, edited the post as some of the names were in fact for the picture above the one in question in the “Spitfire!” book!!

I agree on George “Grumpy” Unwin.

I think the chap sitting next to the wing root may be Brian Lane which would accord with it being 19 Squadron.

The chap in the roll neck sweater looks like ‘Paddy’ Finucane but not sure of he was with that Squadron early in his service.

Re Picture Help

Thats 19 Squadron in 1940. 2nd left is Brian Lane C/O and then George Unwin.

Best Wishes.
Robert.

Well, I could be completely wrong, but that looks like one Sergeant George “Grumpy” Unwin, third from left, with his Alsatian, Flash. Which would make that a shot of some pilots from 19 Squadron, making it a MkI Spitfire.

Compare this shot from the Science Museum website – the angle of the exhaust shadow looks very similar – possibly shot the same day?

Looks like a Spitfire without cannon armament making it a Mk I, II or possibly one of the V’s without cannon’s. Also looks like the lighter underside colour putting it in the period 1940/41.

Any writing on the back?

Regards,

Dan
