I don’t know how you might replicate these. CNC milled paxolin or something?

Stuff is called ‘Trafolyte’ (not sure about spelling) – its a laminated board with various layers of colours. For aircraft we use the black stuff with an inner white layer so that when the (trophy shop) engraver cuts the letters in they show up as white on a black background.

Another way is to get onside with someone with a lazer cutter.They can have the settings down low so the beam will just etch the surface.Another way is photoetching where plate around the text is painted black and then the item is dipped in an acid solution.The text gets etched away leaving the black plate behind it untouched.Most electronic stores have hobby sets for photoetching eloctronic boards.Cheers guys.

Incidentally, I think that plate is the wrong one for a Mk.XVI Spitfire – I think that’s for aircraft fitted with DH props. I suppose the wrong one must have been put on in the restoration.

I have a placard question too –

In a photo of TE476 (Kermit Weeks’ Mk.XVI), there is a placard behind the throttle.
It quite clearly says “Increase Revs” and “Decrease Revs” at the front of the plate, but I can’t work out what the small text is. I presume it relates to the auto-RPM setting.

By the way, Tom – a font that seems to match the Air Min typeface pretty well is “Sublime”. It’s the best match I’ve found.
