Can anyone I.D. this Bomb rack?

Hello Guys. We recently had some of these donated and noone knows what they may be from. Any help will be greatly appreciated. The writing on the side of the rack is as follows.

EM RELEASE Type AIII
DWG no 1924 E2A
Ref no 11A/552

I am thinking it must be something early like a swordfish or lysander? They are quite small less than a foot long? It is resting on top of a 21″ tv so that will give an idea of size possibly?

I guess because I saw the number that sounded like a date and thought it was older. Neat though amazing what turns up.

Hello Alan.
Thanks for the reply. I sent the info you sent to our curator and apparently they know what they are from and have had them for ages now. I was hoping swordfish.,. oh well.

What’s your concern, Peter?

It’s not ‘from’ anything – it’s a standard type rack which would be kept by the RAF or FAA units operating appropriate types of aircraft to be fitted to that aircraft to carry the appropriate kind of store. It could have been (and can still be) fitted to a number of aircraft, including Hawker two-seater biplanes, Lysanders, Walruses, and, yes, Swordfish!

E.M. Release Unit Type A, 11A/552, for Light Series Carriers. Maximum load on bomb hook 40 lbs. Loads such as 20 lb. H.E., 40 lb. G.P., 25 lb. Incendiary,, Smoke Float, Aluminium Sea Marker, etc.

Your guess of Swordfish, Lysander, etc is probably about right.
