I spent a few hours this afternoon on the roads of hell fire corner, here’s a few photos from my stops at Capel Le Ferne, Denton, Elham and finally West Malling.
Elham is the village featured in the fascinating book ‘Harvest of Messerschmitts’ by Dennis Knight. No excuses for including a photo of The Jackdaw at Denton, a couple of pints of Spitfire were downed this afternoon as a tribute to York and Plummer. Lastly the appalling desecration of West Malling aerodrome, the poor control tower sits forlorn amidst the spralling Kingshill development.

Firstly Capel Le Ferne.

Could be a good market for this weather vane!
Elham.
There are atleast four pubs in Elham and so is well worth a visit.
The famous Jackdaw pub.
And lastly the West Malling tower. 🙁

Capel Le Ferne, Elham, and the Jackdaw are within twenty minutes of each other, also well worth a visit is the Kent Battle of Britain museum at Hawkinge.
I had planned to make it along to the Bleriot landing site at Dover, but I was just a bit short on time after my visit to the Jackdaw!

James,
Capel le ferne is on the Dover side of Folkstone, Elham is to the North of Folkstone, not that far from the Jackdaw….all within easy distance of our location…
Hope this helps… 🙂

Fantastic photo’s – thanks for sharing. I’ve not been in that neck of the woods since I was a nipper (about forty years ago) and almost feel a need to get down there.
when/how/where can I schedule sunshine like that? (sorry… past expeditions have been in the northwest and I think I saw about 5 hours of sunlight over a total of 4 weeks)
Hey, I’m in the North West and it hasn’t rained today. No… wait… oh ******.

Contrailjj,
Glad you like the photos, I wish I could schedule the weather, despite being under drought restrictions in the South East of England it rained today right on cue for the opening day of Wimbledon. 😀

Just found this vintage shot of Lindsay Waltons 108, note the tower in happier times.

Nice pics, it’s so sad to see the tower at Malling after going to all those cracking airshows, pathetic. Perhaps Mr McCartney would help, don’t forget that ‘I am the Walrus’ was filmed there complete with overfly by a Shackleton, dig out ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ and remind yourselves.

Thanks, Russ/ Charlielima5,
The Hurricane and Spitfire replicas were manufactured by GB replicas, I’m not sure how long they’ve been at Capel Le Ferne.

Good stuff! I had no idea there was a Hurricane replica at Capel Le Ferne – anone know who made it and how long it has been there?
I had also assumed West Malling’s lovely ‘Villa Type’ control tower had long been demolished – great potential for some form of re-use by the local community surely? I wonder if it is now owned by the council or a developer?

Wonderful pictures…..
I try to do the tour of Kent every few years.
Its sad to think that the airfield of West Malling is no more…the planners don’t give a monkeys, sadly neither I fear do the people who will live there….. 🙁
