Me 262: β€œThe forerunner of all combat jets”

Among the historical aircraft at the ILA2006 the reconstructed Me 262 is really something special. This forerunner of all combat jets and the first jet aircraft to go into mass production will be making its first appearance at any international air show. Although production of the Messerschmidt 262 exceeded 1,400 aircraft no airworthy examples remain in existence, but a modern reproduction has now emerged from the USA. The Me 262 is considered to have been the fastest fighter of the Second World War, with an outstanding performance, and was also the first jet-powered fighter and fighter-bomber to go into service anywhere in the world. Its development represented a major technological advance in aircraft construction. One of its distinguishing features was its engine layout, with the two nacelles being suspended under the wings. It first flew on 18 July 1942 powered by two Jumo-T-1 jet engines. The programme also includes examples of historical aircraft, warbirds and oldtimers such as the B-17 bomber, various fighters such as the Mustang, Spitfire Mk XIX, Skyraider, Corsair, Yak-3 and Yak-9, and sports aircraft including the Mignet HM-8 and a replica of the Avia BM-I.

I wonder if anyone had more photos or could confirm the rumours about 2 x 109’s flying there as well, thanks. πŸ™‚

I know the guy who makes the microlight ‘109s. They look a helluva lot of fun!

It was displayed today, some photos were posted in flugzeugforum.de (you’ll need to register to see them). I am going there on Friday and will post photos here in due course. At least the Messerschmitt-Foundation’s Bf 109G-6 (D-FMBB) is there and is displaying. Although their G-10 (D-FDME) is flying again, I believe it is not going there. There are however to microlight replica Bf109’s scheduled. Rumour has it that the B-17 (“Pink Lady”) won’t be coming due to some paperwork problems (insurance).
