This piece of metal was picked up on the surface near a suspected Hurricane crash site, but can anyone confirm if it is Hurricane, or aircraft in origin, or just junk?
As you can see, one side had a number of lengths of wood fixed to it side-by-side using screws, though most of these have rotted away. Also, at one end you will see what appears to be the start of a cut out section. There are no markings visible.
Any ideas etc. will be welcome.
Geoff.

I’ve been through my book about hurricane which has lots of pictures of Hurricanes undergoing restoration and there is nothing like that. All the wooden stringer run length wise along the aircraft so that piece would have to be vertical. The only vertical strip of metal was by where the rudder attached and that was on a metal frame. It certainly looks like aircraft though though it might not be hurricane.

Sorry Geoff. Hurricanes are a mystery to me mate.. Any chance it might be part of the metal aft of the canopy on the fuselage decking?

Not sure – But!
Afraid I can not give a definite answer, but it does bear a close resemblance to a couple of pieces I have found on one Hurricane dig (PG472) – though mine burnt out so there were no traces of wood. Not being really interesting enough to display they will be in store somewhere at the museum, so I do not have them to hand. Seem to recall they were steel rather than alloy, which yours appears to be and certainly wood stringers were used on Hurricane fuselage construction, so the materials are correct. We also found a lot of small brass screws – in fact they made using the metal detector a pain!
