SAAB B17

hello, just wondering if the swedish saab b17 will be coming over to these shores this year. i’ve tried to look on google for display dates but to no avail. i really enjoyed seeing it at legends last year, something a little bit different and surprisingly manouverable.

thanks

“It was the first four engined jet to fly in the world”
“WHAT?!!!!!”
I think there were at least half a dozen before then so presume that is not what you meant.
(Now there will probably be a rustle of anoraks pulling out a sheaf of earlier machines from the USA, Germany , Russia etc.) 🙂

Sorry, it was very late at night after a long da’s work, and I left out the crucial word airliner. The world’s first four engined jet airliner – or according to the adverts. It first flew as early as 1948 I believe. I had previously thought the DH Comet was the first but this beats it. Maybe the latter was first into regular airline service (with four jets)?

It will only be in Sweden this year, I will see her at WC F4C/F4B on Juli 15th. 🙂 Right after I come home from Legends I will go to Sweden to see World Scale Championship radio controll.

Petter,
Were you referring to radio controlled planes? There is a club called the CONDORS in my area that fly RC planes. They had a B17 with a 10 foot wingspan, 1/9 scale, that blew my mind, it had flaps ,retractable wheels it also was able to emit smoke from an engine. There were many types of aircraft including a jet and a helicopter. I believe that the B17 is now in the Smithsonian museum. The owner told me that it took him 3 years to build and at a cost of $10,000, now he is working on a B24. Very well worth seeing

Ah the SAAB 21, I believe I’m right in saying this is the only aircraft ever to serve in both jet and piston powered varients!.

How about the Avro Tudor, the early marks were piston engined, nd the Tudor VIII had jets. It was the first four engined jet to fly in the world, and it served with the RAF too. Plus, it looked jolly nice, like a large DC-3

My guess is that the wreck is in Ethiopia, which bought 46 B 17As between 1947 and 1953, and used them until 1968.

Yupp, Ethiopia or Eritrea.

Rumors says that two Saab B 17A of the IEAF were active as late as in 1972?!

Megalith,

No, apart from the Saab 21A to R conversion, the Russians converted the Yakovlev Yak-3 into the Yakovlev Yak-15 jet. http://avia.russian.ee/air/russia/jak-15.html

One interesting project was the Saab J 21B, which would have been fitted with an RR Griffon engine! This was never proceeded with, due to the end of the war. Incidentally, Saab attempted to export the Saab J 21 during the mid-1950s, with Afghanistan being a potential client.

More on the J 21A can be found here: http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Jakt/112J21.htm, and the J 21R here: http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Jakt/116J21R.htm

Regards,

Jan

Anyway lets hope she makes a return, from what i hear the guys were so overwhelmed by the welcome they received they’ll be back – and they must have sold a bucket load of their rather snazzy T-shirts!
