I came across these photos in a draw the other day, taken with an old camera passed down from a relative, I was aged about 9 at the time…4 Wessex did a Qick stop and troop drop, which left a lasting impression 😀
The question is where & when?
clue: 2 major motion pictures filmed there…

Memphis Belle the first perchance?!
Of Course!
I have only seen it once, but it was great to see our old Air Cadet hut being used in anger as the dispersal hut, and the bomb dump which is now ‘Mini Belfast’ for urban warfare training

D-FHGK (in the first picture) is still very active in Germany, giving formation displays in the hands of Walther Eichhorn with his son in a second Harvard. They are sponsored by Red Bull by teh way…! SE-FUZ is still flying in Sweden, now in USAAF colours.

Correct!
They filmed the training scenes at Bassingbourn, and built a very impressive looking Assault Course, that in reality was easier to do than the existing Infantry training ones…
They also turned part of the airfield into Vietnam with some Palm trees in skips, grass huts and 2 x mock up Wessex…The other film was older, Black and White and more of a Documentary…

I think one of the films was ‘Full Metal Jacket’, most of which was shot at the disused Beckton gas Works in London.

Bassingbourn, 1978, Harvard Meet. It was quite a big event, with loads of ‘arvards. The neighbours must have hated it.
