Following the tragic death of our friend Steve Young last year, many of us contributed to a collection. This collection was initially intended to pay for a display by WB569 (the first ‘plane that Steve piloted at the age of 13) at his funeral, but there was sufficient left in the pot to pay for something more lasting to stand as a memorial to Steve.
An engraved bench has been ordered that will be placed by the beer hut at Old Warden. We’re going to hold a small gathering to dedicate this bench to Steve’s memory at the first show of the season on the 7th May in one of the hangars (I’ll post details of the time/location nearer to the show). It would be nice if Steve’s friends from the forum could attend the
bench dedication to raise a glass to someone we all miss a great deal.
The remainer of the collection will be divided between donations to:
* The Grace Spitfire (which we hope to present at the dedication)
* The nurses at Addenbrookes who cared for Julie’s Mother
* The Battle of Britain Memorial

Thanks Rob, Andy, Carolyn and all who made that possible.
For those who may be wondering what all the fuss was about, perhaps as recent members of the Forum, or not have heard of Steve directly, I suggest you have a look here, on the thread about Steve’s untimely loss.
Be warned, though, it’s a moving tale.

Many thanks to everyone who made yesterday happen and for those who came to remember our friend Steve. Having started the day with threats of rain we ended up with a marvelous afternoon and I can’t help thinking that someone up there has a great deal of influence with the weather gods.

Thanks to Andy and to Carolyn for standing up in-front of what was quite a large crowd to say a few words about Steve, you both did a splendid job. It’s nearly a year since we lost Steve, but it’s still very difficult to come to terms with the fact that he’s not around anymore.
Thanks also to the Shuttleworth Collection for playing host, for supplying the bench and for dedicating another display to the memory of a good friend.

The bench is currently in Hangar 5 after being given a coat of preservative by Andy and Neil this afternoon. I’ll ask for a couple of announcements to be made over the PA system so that friends and family are aware of arrangements on the day.

I would like to attend but for various reasons I unfortunately can’t be there.
I didn’t know Steve, but from what you all say he was a unique character and everytime I research an old thread, he’s always put his view in there somewhere, very sad really, but in a way he lives on in the Forum.
I gather that the weather could be a bitch tomorrow, c’mon Steve, pull a few strings up there.
I shall raise a glass of wine at 4:00 tomorrow, all the best everyone.

I’ll be there in Spirit sadly, I live too far away and assignments o England are very very rare for me. Please take some pics and post them so that we who are not able to get there can at least see the dedication.
I have lost too many friends in this past year, I will raise a glass at the same time but in my GMZ in honour.

I won’t be able to attend but will raise a glass for Steve on the day. Looking forward to sitting on the bench sometime this year 🙂
Many thanks to all those involved in remembering Steve.

As much as I would like to be there and back in the aviation fold I will be in Cleveland Ohio for my sins.
I will take a thought on the Sunday.

Forgive my ignorance, but did WB569 get to display at Steves funeral?
I realy hope she did.
Yes, Denis Neville put on a spendid display. It was very special to be able to get hold of that particular Chippy.
