Excuse me for the little joke but the look of this part is very strange!
It belonged to a B-24 shooted down in Italy during WW2.
Any idea about its function?
Many Thanks.

Probably the solution is in the following extract:
From “British Aircraft Armament – Volume 1” di R.Wallace Clarke, pagg.170-171:
“The profile interrupter protected the airframe.
It consisted of a cam enclosed in a protective covering, which was turned by a pinion meshing with the turret ring gear.
As the turret revolved the cam turned at the same rate.
On the cam, an exact miniature of the portions of the airframe were engraved.
Fitted to the cam cover was a switch box containing three micro switches, and the contact was opened when a micro switch arm struck the engraved part of the cam.
This broke the gun firing circuit and automatically stopped the guns firing.”

I think it is an excellent intuition!
Many Thanks.

Is it the progamming cam from one of the turrets? (i.e. the bit that prevents the air gunners from shooting themselves down). I have no idear other than that. You might try the WIX forum as they have a resident turret man there.

Hello, the joke is in the title not in the content of post.
It is really a part of B-24 and its lenght is approximately 15 cm (6 inch).
I am curious to understand the function of the strange geometrical forms on the item surface.

Bit difficult to be sure as size is unclear, but my guess is its part of the nose leg shock strut. Possibly the cylinder that centres the leg as it extends when the weight is off it prior to retraction.
Which makes me think, did B24’s have powered nose leg steering or were they free to turn when differential brakes were used?
And yet again it could be part of the cigar cropper!

It is the the trash bin, of course! 😉 😀
I’ll get my coat!
