Moth and Auster lost in fire (Oz)

There are reports that in a hangar fire recently at Barwon Heads Airport, Connewarre, Victoria, a ‘Moth’ and an Auster were destroyed. At the moment, am unable to identify the Moth involved which was apparently undergoing restoration. 🙁

Any news on the Auster’s identity?

No news, but VH-WCL, J5P, s/n 3259 is based at the airfield. Draw your own conclusions 🙁

I’d like to know how a fire like this started. Arson or accident? 🙁

Yes, a bush fire, but the police are investigating it as ‘suspicious’.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your kind words regarding the fire at YBRS. A total of 3 aircraft was lost including the Cirrus Moth. At this time I am unable to confirm the rego info on this aircraft. However, your info regarding the Moth seems probably correct. Other aircraft lost include a Oster and home built Jabiru. In the subject box please click on the link to see photos. The last 3 or 4 photos show the engine and fuel tank to the moth.

Considering the proximity of the other hangar(s) – it could have been much worse…
You’ve got to feel as well for the Jabiru owner – a lot of work gone to waste there too.
Thanks for the link JDK.

Hi BM,
As you say, the engine setup looks odd. However the fuel-tank looks very like a DH-82 type.

eemm, the pics of the “Moth engine and tank” looks a bit odd to me  The cowlings etc dont look like DH60 or 82a? engine has Rocker covers and push rod tubes so would indicate 82 but exhaust manifold looks 60 with an odd tail on it??

Any news on the Auster’s identity?

Someone had to ask! 😀 It took long enough to try and identify the Moth!
I have written to the club and see if a reply is forthcoming.

There’s some photos here at least one of which shows a Gipsy engine and fuel tank from a Moth biplane, and the remains of an Auster.

Bad.

What’s your source? Any date?

Sourced from another forum and the date about the 12th April. The Moth was supposed to be under restoration for twenty six years (!), so the identity is still not 100 %.

It might be deduced that that VH-JGS, D.H. Cirrus Moth 60X was the aircraft involved as it based at the airfield. There are about eleven Moths in the area and this does not include Tiger Moths.
