Hi all,
I have been asked by a witness to a JU88 Crash at Barling Essex during late 1944.
It was dug a number of years ago would you know by who and where the excavated items ended up.
The witness stated that when the aircraft got caught in search lights he circled for a few mins before being shot out the sky by AA fire.
He was first at the crash site and said he wished he had not after the sight he was to see.
The aircraft had a flare container which had split open .
Any details please would be fantastic.

Did we ever find out about the Rougham Heinkel? or whatever Luftwaffe kite parts are probably still sitting behind the barn at Brick Kiln Farm?

the HE111 or the JU88? HE111 was at the top end of Foulness if i remember or you may be confused with the HE111 at Harwich of which parts are on Ebay on a regular basis from a fellow forumite.

I will have to have a look at some of the quarterly newsbooks the EAG sent out to members.
I remember being on the Butlers Farm Ju188 dig but there were one or two smaller site investigations of this type at other locations.
We dug the infamous JU88 at Pitsea marshes though 😉

I have been thinking about the Butlers farm one but it is over a year earlier than the witness states and he seems convinced about the date, he is going to look at the butlers farm location and see if it jogs a memory.

Butlers Farm, now your talking! I know the place really well, spending a lot of time there as a child, my Dad used to do all the maintenace on that farm, and several local others. I never new about the JU188 there though.
I will ask around but sadly my Dad and most of that generation are no longer around.

Colin,
How about the Ju188 down at Butlers Farm Shopland ? Butlers Farm is roughly a mile to the west of Bolts Farm. This was dug by the EAG in 1980.

Jamie, the one at Burnham was at a place called Twizzlefoot Bridge, and we dug it in the mid 80s and the JU88S1 at havering -Atte- Bower was in 1986, we escavated another on Foulness which was not this aircraft.
I remember this Barling dig but thought it was carried out by the OLD Essex Aviation Group and was hoping someone could confirm if not it was one of the many digs carried out by induviduals who used to come together and dig but would then either leave the big parts and run or put them bac down the hole and fill it in these were the people that got Aviation Archaology a bad name as most were just after personal effects.
So we still need to find out more info

Colin, I was going to suggest speaking to the guys at Thameside, but i noticed your name on some other JU88 Essex dig pics:):):)

I did notice there were two other digs with JU88`s in Essex on the site, one at Havering in 1944, miles away, but one at Burnham on Crouch 1943 – just across the river from Barling? ( well almost )

I know the area quite well, its close to the river, and the area around the two farms even now is fairly remote. The 2 farms are less than 1/2 mile apart i would say.
There`s a map below. Also the Parish council have a website ( bit sparce) but some contacts on there maybe able to help further.

Are these two places near to any other towns other than Barling?
By: Colin Wingrave - 13th April 2006 at 18:37
This aircraft could of maybe came down at either “BOLTS FARM” or “ROPERS FARM” near Barling Essex.

Hi Geoff,
I do recall a dig in Barling, but maybe the witness has the dates wrong. I will ask him more over the weekend,
Colin

The only ref to Barling in ‘The Blitz then & now’ for 1944 is to a V2 coming down in November 1944.
Could it be under another location?
Geoff.
