Nord 1101 restored to fly

Local TV in Scotland is reporting the restoration of a Nord 1101, by Jim Hardie of Skelmorlie, Ayrshire. The aircraft is registered G-BSMD , though G-ATDB is also registered to the same owner. The rebuild took 13 years, and was the first such project that Jim, an artisit, has attempted.

G-ATDB was the aeroplane which lingered in external storage at Prestwick for many years, its previous Cof A expiring in 1978. The only other 1101 on the UK register is G-MESS, listed at an address in Epsom.

And speaking of Nord’s…..

…anybody know the status of Noralpha G-BAYV, passed from many pillars to posts before being reduced to a fuselage only, last noted in the car park of the (defunct ?) Botany Bay/Bygone Times attraction in Lancashire ?

The Noralpha had an incident at North Weald and was taken to PPS at Booker for repairs. It might have been out of the air for 13 months.

I am confused. How has he been restoring MD for 13 years, if it has been down at North Weald as recently as two years ago?

still has a 1002 and its for sale – the staggerwing is new though…

Having been at North Weald for years and years, I remember the Nord 1002 was always strapped to the inside of the Aerocars hangar. The Staggerwing has been owned for Robs for years. Remember it as part of the Fighter Wing Display Team in the early 1980s. The attached photos show G-BSMD and the Staggerwing a couple of years ago at North Weald.

This is where I go “small world”. That aircraft (Nord 1002) was based about 20 miles away from where I live in Buenos Aires and is now located 20 miles away from home in the UK.

I was chatting to an old Argie mechanic who was telling me how it came to only have one wing. So say they stripped it for some work, and while it was in that state, local gypsies broke in and stole a wing. The owner visited their camp and offered a “reward” for its safe return but the wing had already been smelted down. No doubt they got about $5 for the metal..

Criminal.

Anyway…

There are wings available in France, so should still represent a nice little project for someone.

Funny old (small) world..

I remember seeing G-ATDB parked in the long grass at Prestwick in May 1992, when we stopped for shall we say a convenience break on our way to Mull. From what I recall it was pretty much a gutted airframe then, nice to know its still surviving in some form or another.

Wasnt G-BSMD the one owned by Robs Lamplough?

Well, some form of reference was attempted, I suppose 😀

Ever mindful not to duplicate news, I did a quick forum search on ‘Nord 1101’ ,
and came up with nothing;- perhaps I should give it the full tabloid treatment.

As discussed in the ‘Henley’ thread somewhere below.
