According to this picture: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1019827/L/ the famous ‘African Queen’ has been broken up recently (and some other aircraft too….). Apparently someone took the trouble to transport the nose section from Chandler, Arizona to Coolidge, Arizona.
Anyone has an idea why?

My apologies! I do recall now that you mention it that they were in fact DC-6s. No matter, these were great birds as well!
Sure are. Never saw the French 6s at all. Just a Turbo Tracker at an airshow in Lyon once. However I do remember sitting at the end of the runway at Fox Field in Lancaster, CA watching DC-6, P2V, and P-3 fire bombers take off. What a spectacle!

If you’re talking about the yellow fire bombers from Marseilles, I’m afraid that they were DC-6s, and not the DC-7C. However the pair in Spain that used to fly for Basaer are 7C models!

Would be great to have this cockpit section in the garden….
Here’s a still from a video I made when I visited Chandler in July 2000. I could walk around there while nobody bothered and I shot about 20 minutes of digital video.

Speaking of DC-7 fire bombers, isn’t France still using them or have those they had in service been retired and replaced by the CL415? I remember seeing those operate over the roof of my grandparents house in the South of France during those hot summer months.

There are two DC-7 fire bombers stored in Spain. Certainly one of these is ex BOAC -it would be great to see one in the U.K.

And she was a very historic airframe as well.Ex G-AOIF of BOAC.DC-7Cs are now becoming as rare as hens’ teeth. If I had the means and the money this is the sort of aircraft I would be preserving instead of yet another Spitifre or Hurricane.
