Looking for a pilot

Is there a site with a list and brief details of The Few? I’m trying to research a friend’s father who passed away many years ago by the name of Anthony Nelson Alfred Joseph Spencer. My mate has naff all details about his service history and is gagging to learn more. If I can find a few details of squadrons etc., I’m on my way.

Thanks in advance for any help you may give.

Anthony Nelson Alfred Joseph Spencer.

With a surname and forenames like your friends father I would ask him to write to RAF Innsworth even without a service number and see what comes back.

Service records of Officers that served from 1922 onwards and Airmen that served from 1924 onwards are held at Personnel Management Agency (PMA).Please write to:

PMA IM 1B RAF
Room 5Building 248A
RAF Personnel Management Agency
RAF Innsworth
Gloucester
GL3 1EZ

Tel: 01452 712612 (ext: 7622)
You might just strike it lucky.

Good luck

Brian.

The service number is pretty important when looking for info on any ex-serviceman, and I don’t think your friend will be able to apply to Insworth for a copy of his father’s service records without it.

It was certainly possible a couple of years back when I got my Father’s

The only Spencers amongst ‘The Few’ are:-

S/Ldr. Desmond Gerard Heath SPENCER who served with 266 Sqn during the battle. He died in 1995.

Sgt. Gordon Hamilton SPENCER who served with 504 Sqn during the battle. He is not listed amongst the surviving ‘Few’ by the Battle of Britain Historical Society.

Have you got a service number for your chap? If not try looking on any RAF documents that your friend might have relating to his father, or on any items he may have from his father’s time in the RAF, as these might have all or part of the service number.

Do you have any idea what aircraft he flew, or even what type such as bomber or fighter?

Geoff.

RAF Innsworth hold all the WW2 service records and will send a colour photocopy to next of kin for a modest fee

“Battle of Britain then & Now” has a list off all B of B pilots. There are two Spencers, but neither have the initials you are looking for.
