Thought I would start a thread to parody the ‘How low can you go?’ topic.
Though there may not be as many spectacular pictures, I would like to hear of some ‘altitude’ stories that have past into legend.
I start with the Lightning and a quote from Sgn Ldr Clive Rowley MBE, ‘Approaching 65,000ft it was noticable how dark the world had become, the horizon had a definate curve to it and the light was comming from below rather than above’ (an excerpt from the March edition of Flypast and credit to all those involved).
Although on this flight he never broke any altitude records it is worth remembering that the all his survival equipment was only certified to 56,000ft!!, I know that this is not the highest that a Lightning has been and I have heard rumours of a story about a pilot seeing 89,000ft!!!, Anyone who has more details on this story please let me know.

Touched on this before in recent threads on the Frightning.
The late Brian Carroll claimed a few hundred feet over 88,000 whilst flying a RSAF F.53 sometime around 1980, and Dave Roome (current Delta Jets Hunter pilot) claimed about 500ft more than that at a few hundred feet short of 89,000 while with 74 Sqn in Singapore about 10 years earlier.
