Was looking for information as to what DC3 was in ‘Memphis Belle’ and came across on http://www.airliners.net a DC3 with a long nose called ‘Memphis Belle’ which, apparently, is the only Dakota to have landed on an aircraft carrier, does anyone know anything about this? Tried googling it but just came up with stuff about the USS South Dakota and stuff about the B17 Memphis Belle.

Of course we all know that a number of U-2s have been operated off carriers, don’t we?

you can 3 point a Dak with a stiff headwind and get it stopped in about 100m. I know it ‘cos I’ve done it.
Less worried about wind-over-deck than the structural integrity of the landing gear (esp tail wheel).

you can land one with the gear up and not damage it at all too, got to get the props perfect tho!

A DC-3 flying off a carrier I can believe, but hardly that one landed. Which carrier should it have been?

Back in, I think, 1985, in the middle of the murky Med, we did an overshoot of USS Nimitz. Didn’t look to big to me, sat in the nose, when I first saw if appear out of the murk. Problem was it kept getting bigger. And bigger.
Oh, sorry. I forgot to mention we were in a Shack. You wouldn’t believe some of the comments on the radio!!

There is a story, but I can’t remember where I read it, that a B-29 returning from a raid on Japan spotted a US carrier and set up a spoof landing circuit and approach. Frantic light signals were aimed at it until a go-around was performed!

ZS-LVR (2) was built as a C-47A-DL, USAAF s/n 43-16009 (c/n 20475), and subsequently registered as N4766C, N950, N5000C and N5000E respectively, before being registered on 1 Dec 1990 as ZS-LVR.
This particular C-47 does not appear in Joe Leeker’s Air America files. However, that doesn’t necessarily exclude a CIA connection. Does anyone have more information on the former owners/operators of -LVR?

Jan

I’ve never heard of a DC-3 landing on an aircraft carrier, but during January 1947, the US Navy used six Douglas R4Ds on Operation Highjump, an aerial mapping and survey mission to Antarctica. The six R4Ds were flown off the carrier, but all were abandoned in situ as they could not land back at the carrier, USS Philippine Sea. Several photos of these R4Ds appear in the ‘Aircraft in Profile’ booklet on the Douglas R4D series.

Speaking of strange “air” ops from a carrier… V-2 launched from CVB-41 USS Midway:http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/carriers/cvb41.htm

I’ve got film footage of the actual landing on DVD, it was taken from the end of a TV programme ( Jag, I think? ). The episode had been about landing a Herc on a carrier or something similar and they tagged the actually footage on the end just to prove it could be done.

I guess I just underestimated the proper size of a carrier’s deck – they always seem crowded to hell in the films/photos!
