Dear All – its been reported for some time that the RAFM has a Sturmovik under rebuild for them at the moment – and jolly fab it will be too – but i have recently heard that in fact they are swapping a spitfire for it -am all in favour of this but is this news or was it known before?

AFAIK the spit in question for the IL 2 swap is the F.21 in store with the RAFM, I last saw the wings at Cosford some time ago, don’t know where it lives now, Stafford? Would be nice to see one of the late late Spits and compare the wing shapes, the IL 2 is coming along nicely too, fuselage is looking much more complete now, even though it’s being finished as static the workmanship is even better than the original Russian work, no wonder we’ll never see one fly on the G reg 😉

Think thats actually on a 10 year loan Dave

Actually 21 years but a lot of those years have already past. It looks very authentic in it’s Dutch colours and much more appropriate than at Hendon.

No but it might release a bit of wedge for the Museum to feed the meter –
wasnt it a gift from the Spanish Air Force in the early 70s?

I can’t imagine it will ever return.

How long is it since they got rid of things that didn’t fit into the RAF scheme of things (Dornier 24 for one)

Blushes!!!
I am sure David and I would happily sit on the board – not sure the board would feel the same though!!!

And would you move to Duxford with the rest of Hendon, or go into glorious retirement, safe in the knowledge that you had saved our aviation heritage?

Uh, oh should have known this would turn into a Whats Wrong with the RAFM thread!
Well on the basis they have TWO Me109s, german and japanese kit I for one am delighted that they will have an IL-2 on show, and have a piece of russian kit on show – think of the wonderful cyrilic slogans they could have (unashamed Flying Tank Fan)

..or indeed two P-51D’s in U.S.A.A.F colours !
I would hope you don’t mind if the recent generous gift by an American of a immaculate airworthy P-51D is kept in U.S.A.A.F. colours!

David, I’ve said this to you many times before, I can find a very good home for those P51’s if need be, now how do we go about getting you elected as president so as you are free to dispose of them?
By: Rlangham - 15th February 2006 at 23:04
Ah, forgot about them! Get’s my vote for president of the RAF Museum as well, as long as he turns up the lights in the Bomber Command Hall, has the Grahame-White hangar open and has the lights on properly in the Battle of Britain Hall for a bit in between the shows (times i’ve been it was only half-lit during the interval, pants for photography)

There are distinct differences between the Hudson and the Ventura . A Ventura could be restored in any number of interesting schemes! As for your other notes – God forbid anyone realises that the RAFM has Vulcans at both Hendon and Cosford or indeed two P-51D’s in U.S.A.A.F colours !

Since when is a postwar Shturmovik more important to the RAFM than the Venture in store. Have they forgotten about Sqnldr Trent who won the VC during the famous raid in May 1943 in Holland?
Anyway, apart from that any deal that releases a Spitfire from storage is a good deal.
Cees
Would be great to have the Ventura on display, but I reckon the reasoning it isn’t is because of the Hudson is on display, so if visitors saw two on display, even if the Ventura was on display at Cosford, may seem to them like repetition (and wouldn’t be surprised if there were arguments on here that two similar aircraft were on display when one of them could be replaced by a more interesting airframe!)

The Sturmovik is underway at Wickenby . It was previously over near Gainsborough.
Something interesting indeed for Milestones – where it fits in with the RAFM collecting policy or lack of remains to be seen!
By: jeepman - 15th February 2006 at 18:34
Cees – rather than a post-war Il-10, it’s an Il-2 from the parts recovered by Jim Pearce a while ago which is currently being restored by the guys doing the Tempest II somewhere in Lincolnshire
Presumably it is for inclusion in the Millstones of Flight hall – wasn’t the Shturmovick the most produced Allied WW2 warplane – that must be the reason for it’s inclusion, as is the absence of any aircraft from our erstwhile ally in the GPW
It’s one addition I applaud – although (banging on again) I wish they’d do a proper job on the Hampden. Financial constraints seem to severely limit acquisitions although I wish some of the other American twins ie Boston, (possible)Baltimore and Maryland (both unlikely – but who knows)were on the stocks.
At least the Ventura is under cover and not open to the elements
