Fairchild Argus/Sibson today

Was at Sibson for the skydive today, and in the hangar was a VERY nice Fairchild Argus, looked a bit like a Fieseler Storch with the engine it has. Also a yellow Tiger Moth and a red Pitts Special as well as other general aviation types, and a yellow Piper Cub. The guy on the photo of the Tiger Moth taxiing with the leather jacket near the tail is the owner of the Fairchild Argus.

There was also a WW2 DUKW by the car park, beats me what it was doing so far inland, although Rutland Water wasn’t too far away

The aircraft storage hangar is a Bellman which was dismantled at Peterborough/Westwood aerodrome when that land was redeveloped and re-erected at Sibson in the late 1960’s. There is an original wartime T2 hangar on adjacent land now converted for “emergency” office relocation purposes.
Thanks to the local fire services for their rapid response which meant that damage was limited to the cafe and parachute centre lounge area.
If indeed this was a case of arson then I do hope the culprit will soon be identified and suitably punished.

Yeah I think so – the whole of the skydiving centre temporary buildings were burnt down, seemed to be a really selective arson attack as only those buildings were burnt down, however whoever did it removed the gas cylinders from around the building. Nice little airfield though, hopefully going to do another jump there in the future, well after my ears have stopped hurting anyway

East Anglia will be the first area of the country to succumb to global warming.

Wise precaution.

Did I hear something about the bar burning down?

The hangar at Sibson is sectioned off with a maintainace company working in the rear part hence it’s size. The other hangar near the DUKW contains an office type company.

True, there great vehicles, got a model one somewhere i’m due to build. Don’t know much about hangars, but did T2 hangars come in different sizes? Looked way smaller than the one at Duxford and Elvington. There was also a similar hangar fenced off near the DUKW, don’t know whats in there.

I think I like the hangar best! A real ratty old WW11 vintage T2 (?), which echos to the sound of merlins and where exotic aeroplanes lurk in the darkest recesses.

There were four like that at Booker, but then the modernisers started modernising, and now there are three ghastly blue sheds,- looks more like an industrial estate.

Apparently the DUKW was for sale in Scotland a couple of years ago, a DUKW restorer told me, so i’m guessing it’s now under restoration, would love to see it going around Rutland Water though!

that will be Jame Bryant’s G-RGUS, flew it last year. Bit like flying a large feather bed!! the rest belong to the relocated Northants School Of Flying. As for the DWK 😮
