This week in our local paper there was a story that caught my eye about a new twist to fly tipping…the complete cockpit section of a Chipmunk. The photographs show that all the instruments seem to be in place and the exterior looks in quite good condition (possibly well looked after). No-one knows who owns it, there is a possibility that it was stolen and dumped. There is a code painted on the side, WK576. Does anyone know anything about this one? Anyone missing a cockpit section?

Chippy
re ATC Chipmunk
Yes its said to be safely back at 1206 Sqn Lichfield. I was very upset to put it mildly when I saw it had been dumped. I stored it for several years when I was a civilian instructer at Lichfield. We spent about three mionths restoring it, with several cadets, as there rot in the wood and considerable neglect.
Then we repainted it and replaced all the signs using hand cut stencils. The only thing missing was a sliding window, which had been reclaimed by the RAF for a flying example, but as it transpired there was damage to the window and it was never used. Unfortuneatley it was never returned either, so we had a missing window.
Still all’s well that ends well, and lets hope they keep it a little more secure in the future.

Thanks for the replies…I thought it looked a bit too good to be ‘fly tipped’. Glad that it is back with the ATC unit.
Dave T…yes I am in the Lichfield/Staffs area.
