Yes they did. In fact they had the same code letters as 616 Squadron. I believe that when 92 changed their codes from GR to QJ in late May i think, 616 did not change theirs, so during the period of the Battle of Britain, 2 Spitfire squadrons had QJ on their aircraft!. So far as i can make out- and i`m sure i will be corrected if i`m wrong, 616 applied their codes slightly thinner and smaller.

Someone on the Britmodeller forum was asking for confimation that 92 Sqn used QJ in Sept 1940, so I will pass the answer on.

As for the 616 Sqn codes, you’re correct about the sizes being different. The story goes that this was down to the sqn’s painter/finisher- a signwriter at a Doncaster coachworks in his normal job-who, when tasked to apply the codes did not have the specification so painted them as he thought right.
