Scottish Aviation's Liberators

In 1946 Flugfélag Íslands (Later Icelandair) was starting to operate international flight, but did not really have the equipment to do it. So for the summer of 1946, they wet leased two aircraft from Scottish Aviation, and the have, in Iceland, always been known as converted B24 Liberator bombers. I’ve only seen a picture of one of these planes, that being G-AHZR. G-info has that one down as an LB30 Liberator, which makes more of a sense!

Now, my real question is, did Scottish Aviation operate as an airline back then, and what might have been the registration of that other machine?

Here is a photo of G-AHZR when operated by Flugfélag Íslands. Photograph is taken by Snorri Snorrason in 1946 in Reykjavik, and is lifted from http://www.photo.is

Hi Galdri,

It would seem that there are a number of errors in the page that I referred to above. Here is some more info on the crash of G-AHZP:

I hope that this info is more reliable. 😀

Thanks Steve! I’d already tried to google it but came up with nothing of note. But then again google-ing skills leave a lot to be desired, along with my computer knowledge in general

So, G-AHZP is the the possible other one. On that page it is said to have crashed while in service with Iceland Airways. None of the LB30 flights operated by Iceland Airways (Flugfélag Íslands-later Icelandair) crashed according to all avilable date on my end, and Flugfélag Íslands did not fly to London at that time. Something is amiss here

Great website – I find it very interesting to learn of the post-war service of combat aircraft – and I’d be fascinated to see the Qantas aircraft !!!
