Does anyone know of a website which gives the very basic history of old RAF a/c by typing in the serial and something similar for civil a/c?
Thanks

Many thanks to everyone for their help. I will certainly be buying the recommended books second hand

Many Thanks again to everyone

Steves absolutely right the Squadron Codes book is another essential item on the bookshelf.
For US kit you really must look at this chaps site – and navigate around it Bureau Numbers from 1908 -present for USN Marines, USAAF and USAF, it really is incredible and the guy is an unsung hero!

Cant remember Wily – I dont think so – they are still worth getting for that price – abe books or ebay turn them up regularly…midland counties still have the civil reg book for sale but it will be full price so dont pay that for a 15 year old book you can pick up second hand!

G-INFO at the CAA website may be able to help with the Civvie regs but does not go back very far- there is an american Bu nO website but as far as I know, no RAF one.
I suggest a solution for under a tenner – get theeself copies of:
British Military Aircraft Serials – PSL 1979
Civil Aircraft Registrations – Midland Counties C.1990 – Dave someone….
(ok it only goes up to 1990 but covers most historic types)
Have seen both books for a couple of quid each and they are essentials for your library.
