Sorry if this is old news and been discussed already but I don’t have my intelligent head on today. I just got this email from someone whose brother is in Iraq.

Tell him if you see him that we found a plane museum in Baghdad the other
day, open air small place. Apart from the usual MiGs 15, 21 etc we saw
a Hawker Sea Fury pretty good nick, in Iraqi colours. Apparently worth
a Million. Surprised the locals haven’t had them away for the scrap.
Anything that isn’t bolted down usually goes missing.”

Rlangham- The ‘Sea Furies’ are ISS and IDT’s – Iraqi single seat and dual trainers.
Some are new build and others are former Sea Furies ‘denavalised’ . There are plenty of former Iraqi Furies around the world and we really don’t need to take more of Iraq’s
heritage . As for the Twin Pin – in the nineties one was broken up at Shobdon and another is stored with Air Atlantique. Getting away from the romance of it do we really need another Twin Pin at huge expense?

Isn’t there a rumour that at least 1 ‘libertated’ Fury has already found it’s way back to a UK MOD establishment ‘somewhere in England’… 😉
I’m afraid the said article isn’t chapter & verse on what is what or went where.
I think its common knowledge that at least one whole airframe was sneaked back in someone’s kit bag. I’ve certainly read it in FP & Aeroplane before now, but i guess we’ll have to wait a few more years for the dust to settle ?

And of course there is the USAF film of another Fury at an Iraqi airfield somewhere being vapourised by an LGB along with several Hunters……

Wow didn’t expect to hear anything like that, any chance of them being moved to other countries? Would be nice to have the Sea Fury back in Blighty, and also the twin pin from the airport

Yes, there is an article in the latest issue of ‘Classic Wings Downunder’ on just this very subject.
I can scan it for you or they should have something under ‘cuurent issue’ on their WEBSITE .
Cheers…….
Thanks for that. I looked at the bit under current issue and that will probably suffice for me. I don’t think the current mrs zooty will let me go to Baghdad to see it though. 🙁
