Flight related Xmas presents

Ok then, who woke up on Christmas morning to find a gift wrapped B-36 Peacemaker on the drive, no-one, thats a shame.
Apart from an Ozark banjo, my missus bought me Dark Blue World and the Battle of Britain special edition DVD. I had a quick prevew of Dark Blue World, it looks magnificent, even my missus fancies watching it, and it certainly appealed to her Hungarian dad.
Have just cleared up the dining room from yesterdays feast, and what a get together it was, the first Xmas without my old man but my mother is having fun washing up what wouldn’t go in the dish washer.
Hungarian Joe insisted on watching my airshow videos from last year, pride of place being Ray Hanna in October, I didn’t remember that I had taken such a cockpit close up of him landing for the last time, also enjoyed the Jaguar farewell last March, ‘looks bloody cold’ said mother.
I came into the dining room to find musical instruments all over the place, my recollection of the musical evening last night is a little hazy, and to think we have to go through it all over again today at Hungarian Joes is a very daunting prospect.
At least I’ve got some prize winning black pudding from Ilkeston for breakfast.
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, lets hope it’s a good one.

Nope, your ma and pa need to be cousins at least and preferably brother and sister.

pre-requisite for banjo playing

Sorry, they were a Notts/Lancs combination, banjo now in bin, now where is that accordion, presume I need a kilt to be able to play that, or handkerchief on head.
My late old man used to play the trombone, apparently he played the last concert at the Crystal Palace before it burnt down, but he was always carefull where he left his pipe.

Melvyn, why doesn’t my banjo playing sound like the kid in ‘Deliverence’, is it because I’m obviously not a gentleman.

One of the Instructors on 2 FTS at Shawbury was a Banjo Player (Amos, for those who were there…), after one particular ‘Bad Weather Barrel’ and the Sgts Mess bar having shut early (04:30), he then tried to teach me said instrument in the corridor…..I can’t remember the word ‘Gentleman’ amongst the terms used by the other residents…. :diablo:

A, D and F? What key are you playing in? (the key of Yale?)

C Am F and G is good for tons of 50s rock and roll, any three (A, D and E or E A and B) will do you for most other things.

At a Salisbury blues night some months back someone asked what key something was in and the guy said “E’. Since the drummer was prannying about he didn’t hear so asked “A for Apple or E for Elephant” The other guy then said “E, for Everything that is not in A”

Now you have your guitar go and play with as many other people as you can. Get out, go to open mike nights and you will improve far more quickly.

Phil Harding, he of the hat from Time Team who is a regular at several blues nights once said something that is very, very true about playing guitar. He said “Y’know Melv, there’s no halfway house between playing at home in your bedroom and going out and making a tw*t of yourself!”

He is, of course, 100% right.

You know how to live . . .

Melvyn, Sorry you are right it is A, D & E that I am starting with!
I need to practice a lot more before I go public, I don’t mind making a tw*t of myself, as long as I am a tw*t with promise!

I made sure that I practised a lot before flying my Radio Control Helicopter during a presentation in the auditorium at work (much better than Powerpoint!) and at a garden party! 😀

I received two new books…both very well done (albeit with a couple of production …as opposed to editorial…errors). Since neither type served with the RAF, I’m not sure many on this site will care..but here they are.

The C-82/C-119 history
and the new book on the Boeing B-47 both by Alwyn Lloyd.

IM not so HO: The B-47 was perhaps the greatest leap in design of any military aircraft since the early days in WWII…it pioneered multi jets, swept wings, air to air refueling, accomodations for “special weapons”…all at the same time, all under the umbrella of SAC’s bomber force. Not only was it revolutionary in terms of structure and powerplant, it went on to have a huge production run and (by standards of the day) a long service history. Impressive stuff for a plane that first flew in 1947.

Also, I bought “Headquarters SAC Analysis of B-47 Accidents” a privately published 108 page paperback by Col. Sigmund Alexander, USAF (Ret.)
It discusses…briefly…89 major mishaps involving B-47s from 1951 to 1962.
No photos, but it’s a good reminder that flying complex and demanding military jets…even in peacetime…was a hazardous profession.

Is Moggy’s Dambusters DVD the new version by David Frost.

Not played it yet, but it looks more like Richard Todd on the cover than Tom Cruise. 😉
