2005 Sad Losses

As the year draws to a close I thought it might be fitting to start a trhead that will remind us of those who the historic aviation community has lost over the past year. Warbird pilots, engineers, owners, etc, as well as notable veterans. Anyone who hs been prominent in the field of historic aviation who has passed away in 2005. Feel free to include info on airraft lost too.

Two on the top of my list are Kiwis who both had notable careers, Ray Hanna of course, and Battle of Britain pilot Gp Capt Edward ‘Bill’ Wells.

Also Art Vance in the USA

My mind has gone blank as far as other names, but I’m sure you can add many more to the list, some we will all remember, some may have slipped our minds, some we may not have even been aware of. May they all rest in peace.

Very sad that we have lost so many this year in one way or another. I am particularly sad to read of Matt Jarvis’ death. I knew Matt while he was a holding officer at Akrotiri in 1994 or 1995. At that time he had completed Toucano training and was waiting for a Hawk training slot. He struck me as a guy who was destined for the top.

There was Steve of course, and a month before a friend of mine from New Zealand, Warrant Officer Tom Annear, WW2 609 Squadron Typhoon pilot. A great chap, and I miss him. If I look through the Squadron obits there are more, but Tom was the only one I new personally, and well.

The Loss of Steve Young was a huge one, I only had the pleasure to meet him once, But remember fondly his sense of humour that shone through in his posts here on the forum.
We had a accident free Airshow season in the UK, But sadly we lost Ray Hanna in the close season, Next year Biggin Hill and Duxford will seem so empty.
I pray 2006 will be accident free in the UK and in Europe and America too.

Two more,

“Bobby” Younkin
Died Sunday, July 10, 2005
Age 49

Jimmy Franklin
Died Sunday, July 10, 2005
Age 57.

Both killed in a mid air collision during a display at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan – Canada.

Jimmy with his son Kyle and their jet powered Waco wing walking act were my favourite ever airshow act.
Sadly missed.

I was sitting in a cafe on Wednesday recovering from a burst of shopping when I spotted an obituary in the Times newspaper that the cafe kindly provided. It detailed the history of a naval aviator of whom I had not previously heard, Lt Cdr (I think) Baldwin. This gentleman had survived flying the Roc and other assorted naval nightmares, had helped introduce the Seafire and later the Attacker and was instrumental in the development of the angled -deck and through -deck carriers. Did any of you know him and can flesh out the details at all? Another of the good guys by all accounts. God bless.

Biggest loss to this forum was Steve Young.

The responce on here at the time was touching as most of us felt like we knew him, even if we’d never met him.

And of course Ray Hanna.

My son Andrew. Aged 21. Lost August 28th. While not a historic flyer, he got a love of aviation history from his Dad and shared the passion. Model builder, flight sim flyer, helped at the Minnesota Air Guard Museum when he was younger, drew great images of WW2 planes, although he was more of a Luftwaffe fan then an RAF Spit fan like his Dad. He would have carried the torch for his old man had he stuck around.

Hope you don’t mind I added him to the list. His sister Christina too, although she never had the aviation bug.
