I was driving from Dunmow to Gt Canfield at 12:30 when I saw this wierd shape in the sky, somewhere in the direction of the Rodings. At first it looked like something out of Independance Day, it was triangular with a small dot ahead of it, Will Smith in his F-18, I thought.
I decided it was probably one of those bird scaring kite things that had come adrift, the aircraft from Stansted were keeping well away though.
Eventually I got to my mates joinery shop where the lads said it was an enormous banner type thing about the size of a football pitch being towed around by an aircraft.
I then went to Lt Dunmow and you could still see it in the sky, it dissapeared about 1:30.
Anyone have a clue as to what it was, NORAD Santa perhaps.
Sorry, Merry Christmas everyone.

SeaDog has already said that it came from North Weald.
It’s the best airfield to go to for fuel, you know. Fabulous service.
Can’t be equalled 🙂

Cheers for that everyone, obviously missed that thread first time round, if it was flying around the M25/M11 intersection, then it must be huge as Little Dunmow is a long way from there.
It is interesting how far you can actually see things in flight, I used to live in a farm cottage next to Wethersfield base, quite high up. One day I was able to watch a/c performing at Mildenhall airshow, with a pair of binoculars admittedly, however you could clearly see the Red Arrows with the naked eye, mind you, I had the programme from going the day before so I knew the running order.
A few years ago one of the F-15 pilots famously flew what was known as the Golden Circle over the base, a perfect circular vapour trail at sunset, I could quite clearly see this from Great Dunmow and had it in sight all the way home, it was visible all over East Anglia apparently.
I also used to live in another part of the village with a stunning view to the North, estimating the height and speed of high flying jets I reckon you could see them until they were 150 miles away at least.

I saw this over Cambridge a couple of weeks ago and just couldn’t believe what I was seeing! How does that helicopter manage to keep flying with all that drag etc underneath – that flag is huge!!

I thought it might have been Blackpool’s Vulcan on a ferry flight to Thunder City…

T’was Twin Squirrel, launced from North Weald around noon, towing very large black rectangular (almost square) black banner with white letteing, up and down the M11/M25 intersections, saying something to the effect that (internet?) piracy was a crime, report it, don’t support it, and gave an e-mail address to do so. Landed back at around 1300/1330.
