Stradishall pictures.

Hi.
I have just moved into one of the old officers houses on the site of RAF Stradishall and I am keen to know more about the airfield and would love any pictures if possible. I have allready been for a recce over the airfield and most of the main runays are now gone but some of the dispersants and taxi ways still exist. also so do some of the original buildings(My house overlooks the old Guard house) It would be great to get a better picture of this airfield in it’s prime!

I was stationed at Strad #1 ANS from 65-67, I worked on the Meatboxes until they were phased out by the DH125 Dominies, I then went to work in the shed on Varsity aircraft

I lived at #65 Poplar Drive diagonally opposite the guardroom

I have also got a pictue of a crashed lightning at Stradishall

23/08/68 – XS418 – Lightning T5 – undercarriage collapsed on landing scraping the tail and belly tank on the runway, the pilot got her airbourne again ( with large flames of burning leaking fuel ) but then returned for a succesful landing. The aircraft was repaired on site and returned to 226 OCU at Coltishall 09/01/69.

Hope this may be of help. 🙂

Stradishall Pictures

My area of interest concirning the airfield is mostly post war. I have seen various pictures on display which show Meteors and the odd Vampire. I have also got a pictue of a crashed lightning at Stradishall and a crashed Venom?? (Could be a vampire!) But thank you for the advice keep it coming!

I hope you get some response to this subject, I live only a couple of miles away from Stradishall. It was long closed before I moved to the area, but was home to the most escaped from prison in England at the time.
The chap that used MOT my cars had been based there, in the days of Varsity’s & Domini’s.

Try Googling, theres some interesting info on there.
I presume that you must be in the prison service or are some of the properties now privately owned, I assume that you are aware of one of Highpoints most notorious inmates, the late Myra Hindley, we can see the lights of the prison on the road from here to Steeple Bumpstead and it always made me shudder to think she was so close.
If you want to explore an interesting place, go up the track from Barnardiston towards the old RDF tower site, there’s some strange old places up there.

I am very envious of you living in an historic location. I have found the best books to find out more about an airfield are the “Action Stations” series of books. Each one covers a different area of the UK and overseas. They seem quite expensive these days so you might want to try a library.

Welcome to the forum shakkabomb.

I don’t know of any specific books or websites that will give you access to pictures but there are plenty of sites on the web with its history.

You could try your local library in Haverhill or Bury St Edmunds or try your local history society.

The “Action Stations 1 – Airfields of East Anglia” gives a good description of the the airfield but not a lot of pictures. The local Council could hold good information in their picture libraries.

Good luck in your venture.

Brian.
