Another photo plate image for identification.

Photo is of a He111 transport sent from the Russian Front to Catania in Italy. Destroyed by Allied bombing. See Merrick’s book German Aircraft Markings, page 120 for the photo.

There’s an Italian fighter in the background in the Arado picture. Definitely the Mediterranean area.

Picture of the Gotha in a separate thread leads me to wonder if I shouldn’t change my guess to Crete.

Definitely Heinkel 111 – that light patch beneath the wing is possibly white, which I think was Mediterranean theatre. Having said that, the fuselage band looks a shader darker than the wing panel.

Unit is beyond me.

My guess would be Malta – but it is only a guess based on that rough stone wall.
