I was eating my muesli this morning watching ‘Swiss Toni’ on the Sky box when I was somewhat taken by surprise…….
‘Swiss Toni’ is a comedy series built around the ‘Fast Show’s’ character of the same name. By profession he is a used-car salesman. Probably because the series comes from a comedy sketch show it is split into segments that are intercut with old car adverts for Marinas/Minis/Minors. Imagine my surprise when I saw a 1970s US add for the Triumph Spitfire which showed the Triumph and AR213 running side-by-side, the Triumph driver wrapped in an Irving jacket. The scene then changes to the real Spitfire lifting off and raising the undercart while the narrator desperately trys to link the products of Supermarine and BL and the ability to ‘pull birds’
Moral of the story? You never know when stuff will pop-up

Another Spitfire thread…wonder how long this one will go ?
AB910 pic was early (mk1?) Spitfire car, AR213 is mk3 car
Prefer my German car (now that IS off topic !) but it’s not
a Messerschmitt
To bring it slightly back on topic who remembers the Michael Bentine TV sketch with a Messerschmitt bubble car (two seats in tandem) driving around BBC Television centre being shot up by (? can’t remember) and the driver baling out. My parents couldn’t see the joke – I was laughing my socks off.
Roger Smith.
PS nice car – Isetta?

Veteran and Vintage Aircraft has a similar but subtly different view – AB910, rather than AR213

Wasn’t there a printed advert along those lines on the rear of the first edition of Les Hunt’s “Veteran & Vintage Aircraft”? I haven’t got a copy so can’t check.
Roger Smith.
Quite right Roger, I may still have my copy somewhere!

I’ve got a poster advert of the two together. It’s quite easy to find at airshows. Mine is in storage, so I have no further info on it though.

BL actually used Ginger Lacey in some publicity photos for the Triumph Spitfire – the tag line (which is memorable and i have a postcard of it) was:
‘With the new Spitfire not only do you get the girl but also a slice of history’…pictured next to ‘a spit’ will try and find the postcard…

What’s interesting about that wee bit of film is that it shows AR213 with the underside of one wing painted black – I’ve only ever seen one photo of her like that. 🙂
