Green is used in hospitals and prisons (especially on death row) and does calm people down.
That probably was the rationale at the time (not sure about cockpit interiors though), however it looks like those ideas were ill-founded:
The research indicating that red incites aggression, green is calming, and yellow stimulates the intellect is simplistic and outdated. Hundreds if not thousands of schools, hospitals, and prisons were painted light green (thought to induce calm) in the middle of the twentieth century, with the result that this perfectly good color family was tainted as an institutional kiss of death by the 1980s and ’90s. When the spectrum is used thoughtfully, all colors have a place for learners of all ages.

I have seen listings from this seller before, based in Cambridgeshire. He imports Russian Military equipment, usually 4 wheel drive vehicles, and the odd SAM launcher! He was featured on the Local TV News a few months back.
I not sure if all the items are currently in the UK though.

Thanks for the responses on the cockpit colour thing, taking a similar vein, when I was in charge of a large Computer rollout across EMEA we took the decision to lock the desktops to the standard greeny/blue colour, as we supposed that Macroslap would have spent millions deciding on the most restful colour, rather than Gloria in accounts changing it to Pink on Purple. Funnily enough there were 2 countries that complained the most…. 😀

Philip – I think death row and the end result is possibly the most effective way to calm people down!

I believe I may be able to answer that.
At the Midland Air Museum we also have a Hind. Big ugly egg beater but very aggresive looking.
I commented once on the horrible colour of the cockpit and was told that the colour was discovered by the Russians to be the most soothing and relaxing colour for its aircrew after conducting some trials.
Now I may be having my leg pulled but the daftness of it does make it seem plausible.
Maybe others can confirm or deny the story?

Actually I love that colour… In WWII the Japanese painted their aircraft with similar finish – called phenolic green. I wonder if the Russians use a similar treatment?
Why are Russian Cockpits always such a bright Green or Blue?
I Like the idea of having a large helicopter to play with at dinner parties, just the kind of thing once everyone’s had a bit to drink…
By: Arabella-Cox - 19th October 2006 at 11:28
Diet?
I think its a dietary thing! Its probably Russian vomit colour, since RAF Cockpit Green was said by some WW2 RAF pilots to have been used because you couldn’t notice the vomit so easily! Maybe Russian pilots all drank Wikd Vodka? 😀

That is certainly what I have heard. Though I’m not sure that relaxation is a prime consideration for a combat pilot!
