Spitfire mad!

i’ve just bought the new edition of flypast and reading through the surviving spitfires list, its astounding to think that we have 21 flyers, and by my calculation around 19-22 new projects which in the not so distant future will see these wonderful planes fly again!! from what i can gather there is 3 or so which will fly pretty soon (peter monks mk 9, hfl spit V and hfl spit xvi). does anybody know any information on any of the other projects listed in the ‘work in progress’ section and also the ‘in storage’ section (i.e the subject of the moment the tfc MK XXII) and what is happening with these. this time though can we try and capture some information rather than slag off people who wish to try and enjoy this forum. 😀

Yes Rlangham, when it was restored by the Medway Preservation Society a few years ago (what a great bunch of restorers) the Cosford Mk1 was restored to ‘stock’ (chrome controls, ring and bead sight, flat canopy etc). It’s fantastic.

Yes Rlangham, when it was restored by the Medway Preservation Society a few years ago (what a great bunch of restorers) the Cosford Mk1 was restored to ‘stock’ (chrome controls, ring and bead sight, flat canopy etc). It’s fantastic.

Probably a stupid question, but does the Cosford Spit I have a flat canopy like early Mk I’s? On photos i’ve seen of it it seems to be flatter than the distinctive bubble canopy.

what other spits both in the uk and abroad can we expect to see flying this year? i know the arco mkix has just flown, we should have a new mxviii with the tfc, and although its a seafire, the tim manna example. any others?

The world renowned Spitfire Expert Peter Arnold had a Spit in his gararge years ago You don’t hear of him or the aircraft much these days. Is he still beavering away at it?

As for MkI Spits – there are two, possibly three, under rebuild.

AR213/G-AIST, as already mentioned.

P9374/G-MKIA – not sure what’s happened to this one.

The Real Aeroplane Co have another (whose serial I forget) on long-term rebuild.

‘213 is coming along nicely, still chasing the odd elusive part, engine is going off to Retro soon and the prop is due to go to Avia (it’s a Dh 3 blader not the old 4 blader) so we hope to have her back in the air by this time next year, or before, if things go well. Should be about as stock as possible once completed, TR.9D radio, flat sided hood and external armour glass screen, oval-glass gunsight, oxygen system and, if we can find a pattern to copy, mechanical undercarraige position indicators in the wings.

Spitfire Madness……or Spitfire Nonchalance ?

We had friends over from California recently, when a Spitfire flew over our house one weekend, Dave went into raptures, I didnt even look up, ‘Wow a Spitfire’ he gleefully shouted as he ran into the garden, ‘we see them all the time Dave, no big deal anymore’ I said.
There was a time when i would have jumped out of my chair to run and look, but this day and age with the prospect of more to become airworthy has taken the magic away.
Now a Hurricane is an entirely different matter 😀

I’m still unsure who your ‘mystery guide’ was, might’ve been Tom Allibone……

As for ‘262 the wings are finished, Hull Aero finished them a while back, the fuselage hasn’t been touched since you last saw her in ’96 but that MIGHT change soon, time will tell.

i’m really looking forward to seeing the new HFL MKV in desert camo with the dessert filter on it! it would great if the fighter coollection changed the kittyhawk M to a RAF tomahawk desert camoflage (bearing in mind the p40b is nearing completion) with the TFC hurricane beating up the airfield!! its a shame black 6 is no longer flying. now don’t get me started on that…… 🙁 😡

Spitfire XIV MV262 – I’m sure that was there at Booker when I was there in 1996. Anything done on it since?

(I STILL haven’t found out who the pilot was who showed me around the restoration side! :()
