Unusual Auster

Came across this photo on ebay today, any idea what it is? Never seen an Auster like this before, at a guess it’s a prototype for some sort of medivac auster? Bit like a plane version of the Bell 47’s in MASH

Ah very nice, the one on the register was at Oakham, so technically now Rutland. Would be nice to see her finished, if i win the lottery she’ll be mine!

She has been under rebuild for years! The ‘right’ money was circa 25K so I don’t suppose there will be a rush for her!

There is an Auster III under restoration at Leicester which is probably the one listed on G-INFO near you. The pictures were taken about eighteen months ago, so the restoration has moved on a bit since then.

I was told the owner would sell it ” for the right money”

Personally i’d love an Auster III, lovely aircraft. i believe theres one flying in green/dark brown, with far eastern theatre roundels? Would love to see it one day, big fan of the Auster. I’ve seen photos of the collection of Austers before, would be great to see them restored.

It’s this one HERE (G-AREI) I think you’re referring to.

I must agree with David, when the Auster was considered a usless hack by many Cliff was collecting. Now when we need parts or peices of information, drawings, etc. he has a wealth of knowledge. When restoring a J-4 Auster he was virtualy the only sorce of info and parts, and now as an owner of a J-1 Cirrus Minor powered Auster, he and Stan are who I turn to for parts and info. Both people have always been very helpful. Living on the opposite side and down under, information and in particular parts are hard to come by.

The other side of the coin is that Cliff was saving Austers when virtually everyone else
was scrapping the things.Adding to that I cannot see anyone else rushing to bring an Agricola back into the U.K like Cliff has. Certainly a lot are stored at the farm -but they are safe and I am sure they will see the light of day eventually.

Sounds a bit like the Rapides at Chirk…

Ah, Chirk.

Have a photograph of a signpost “Chirk 1 3/4” – as close as my wife would allow me to go when driving to Chester earlier this year 🙁

Well, it was our wedding anniversary

Roger Smith.

I have heard that what is left of the ‘B-4″ is at Carr Farm with Cliff Baker under a slow rebuild, or maybe he is building a replica using some of the orignal parts, but I have seen photos of one (or bits of one) in his workshop.

Unfortunately, if its with Cliff Baker its unlikely to ever see the light of Day!! He has many Auster treasures at Carr Farm, all hiddden away and its difficult to get anything out of him.

Heres what G-INFO has to say about her;

http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?categoryid=60&pagetype=65&applicationid=1&mode=detailnosummary&fullregmark=G-AMKL

As she’s de-registered, i would guess she has been scrapped or in storage etc

http://www.austerclub.com/b_series/b_4.htm

Looks like i was half right, perhaps the rear doors were removed for dropping supplies on this photo?
