Wanaka 2006 forum get together / booze up / meet

Hi all

I am going to Wanaka 2006 at easter and I thought thjat by now a lot of forumites plus the WIXers would be going as well .

I will be there for 10 days but in Wanaka the Friday and Saturday as well as Sunday night.

Given that forumites from Aus , UK , USA and all over the world will be there perhaps we could ORGANISE a get together so at least we all have a sort of “Red lion of the South” event where we all sit around and have a social get together ….

So Perhaps it could work like this
1) List here if you are going for sure
2) I will sus out likely places we can meet for dinner/drink
3 ) Strat anm email stream to keep in touch so we all know whats happening

So are you going ?

Regards

Hi

Copied from a post of mine on WIX re Mandeville NZ and Wanaka accomodation

Hi Re Mandville

Yes I was there last year and I shall again (just booked tonight) next year for a look around – fantastic place with so much rich heritage both DH types and others so Don’t miss it and so close to Wanaka – you would hate to miss out – a Dragon Rapide and a Dragonfly flying on the same field – Fanrtastic plus lots of Tigers . Leapoards, Puss and other types – An Oxford/Ambassador being rebuilt REALLY lots to see and do and they have a nice restraunt etc – well worth the visit

and ……………..
Dear Anne,

I have been forwarded your email by Lake Wanaka Tourism in the hope I can find you some accommodation here in Cromwell as all accommodation is now completely full in Wanaka.
Cromwell is a 35 minute drive from Wanaka and if you are going to the Air show ,as most people seem to be, the airfield is on the Cromwell side of Wanaka.
Most accommodation in Cromwell is also booked however I can offer you a motel unit, brand new still under construction but finished well before April or Home stay bed and breakfast accommodation.
Please get back to me if you would like to be accommodated here in Cromwell and I will get back to you with the options and prices.I will be able to book the accommodation on your behalf if you are able to supply your credit card details.

Yours sincerely

It will be good to see you Trapper 69 on my home territory, it was great to meet (and compete against) you, hopefully be back again in the not too distant future for another fantastic and friendly aero’s comp. Tracy and I had a great time and it was good to catch up briefly again at Duxford before heading back home.

See you at Mandeville and Wanaka……

Diana and I will be there over Easter for the southern hemisphere airshow warbird extravaganza. Enjoyed the show in 2004 so much we decided to squander even more of the kids inheritance with Cathay for the flights to and from Auckland and will be in NZ from early March to mid May. So many other aviation attractions to catch up with as well plus (DV) knocking off my 300km to finish my Gold “C” in the finest gliding country in the world IMHO. Gore/Mandeville is high on the list for an extended visit too. I will read through the threads carefully tomorrow.
Cheers,
Trapper 69

Welcome Mike.

The latest news announced today on the airshow – from the official website here
http://www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com/

5 October 2005:A Russian Yak-3 fighter from World War II will make its airshow debut at Warbirds Over Wanaka next year.

This particular aircraft is one of only a handful in the world which has been converted from a Yak-11 to a Yak-3. This conversion was completed by Pioneer Aero Restorations in Auckland.

“We are pleased to confirm that a Yak-3 will be making an appearance at Warbirds next year. We haven’t seen one in the skies over Wanaka since 1998, and we are sure it will captivate the crowds at next years show.” said Gavin Johnston, General Manager of Warbirds Over Wanaka.

Yak-3’s are famous for their high power to weight ratio, making them one of the Russian’s smallest and lightest fighters. By 1946 Yak-3’s were a part of Air Forces in many European countries such as France, Yugoslavia, Albania and Poland.

This aircraft was originally owned by the Egyptian Air Force and was purchased by the late Mark Hanna in the 1980’s then shipped to Russia. From there it was relocated to England where it remained unworked on for ten years.

The aircraft is now owned by Ray Hanna and will be based permanently at Wanaka at the conclusion of Warbirds Over Wanaka 2006.

I will be there, arriving Thursday and leaving Monday. There is a fairly large group of aviation mad MG drivers heading from Auckland to Wanaka and I’m sure most would be keen to join in. We are renting a couple of houses in Wanaka over the weekend. I’m a “lurker” on this forum but definitely keen to meet everyone!

In Feb 2004 when I visited Wanaka with Mum and Dad, we couldn’t get accomodation the first night in the town or anywhere near, so drove down to Alexandra, where we did get a motel room. That’s another option as it’s not really that far (until you get into the many kilometres of airshow traffi I suppose!)

For all those attending, just an addition to Dave’s comment re accommodation.
It is often mentioned that accommodation is scarce over the weekend but in past years this has been found to be not quite right.
Yes, a lot of hotels etc are booked solid but you do tend to find that a lot of the locals rent out their homes or holiday houses for the show, and sometimes at quite reasonable cost also (if you have a group of people or can meet up with outhers thid option is great).
If this sounds like a good option get in touch with the local real estate agents in Wanaka and if they dont know Im sure they can put you onto someone who does.
Also there are a number of towns which are quite close, which may also have accommodation, Cromwell (40min approx), Queenstown (1hr but rather $$$), Gore/Mandeville (we usually run flights to the show, weather dependant in the Rapide, Dragonfly etc etc. Its about a 2hr 50min drive or a 50min flight from Mandeville).

See you all there…

I really want to go, more than ever before (I haven’t been to a Wanaka airshow since 1993 and hate missing out!). Just knowing there will be a lot of people from the forum meeting up there makes me want to go even more. I shall have to find a way to get there, even if it means hitchhiking and sleeping in a paddock. (you’ll be hard pressed finding accommodation for that weekend now, it’s usually all booked by a year before they reckon)

For those who’re travelling from foreign climes to NZ, if you decide to incorporate the full tour of the country (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) and you’re heading north by road, let me know as you’ll pass hrough Cambridge. You’d all be welcome to call in for a chat and cuppa tea, or a few beers and a place to kip maybe.

As said over on WiX (a very civilised place) I am tempted, this maybe an alternate to re-visiting the States next year. All I have to do is convince the present Mrs EN830 that she wants to endure the 24 hour flight to New Zealand.

‘Classic Wings’ will most likely have a tent there, but not confirmed at this time. Sounds like a few ‘new’ aircraft will make their debut.

Ill be there for sure, most likely all three days….may have the DH90 there on static display, possibly for a new book being launched (may be flying, not too sure at this time). Will probably have the 1910 Pither monoplane replica there also.

It would be great to catch up with any of the forumites attending, also open invitation to come visit us at Mandeville either side of the show.

Will you be stopping by our way John??
