Air Commodore Peter Brothers, chairman of The Battle of Britain Fighter Association, said last night: “It needs constant emphasis that, although Nelson saved the country, Dowding saved the world. Had he lost, there would have been no toehold in Europe for the Americans to come and help, should they have wished to. This is our home, as the Victory is for the Navy.” The association, which has fewer than 200 members now, is trying to persuade the MoD to donate the building to the association as its permanent home.
