Losing my Shuttleworth virginity!

After years of saying “I must get to Old Warden…” it look as though my girlfriend, two friends, and I will finally get there for the Autumn Air Display. Coming from Oxford, I think we can even manage a diversion to OW through Cardington and see the airship hangars before anyone does anything silly with them.

Four of us are going, armed with an assortment of weird cameras (list likely to include a Werra, a Robot, an SLR with a set of dustbins on the front and a Box Brownie or two – seriously!). So you now know who we are, and to run when you see us.

Anyone else going? ANy hints or tips as to what to see/do first?

Adrian

TT, Here’s the rather lonesome looking Hornet Moth at last saturdays Flying Evening. Its a shame the Hornet Moth has not been used more over the last few years, given its one of their more practical transports.

Septic.

Sorry Septic old chum, been off radar for a bit – thanks for the pic….sigh….still no takers for the old girl, bless ‘er

🙁 🙁

You look familiar – there were four of us, two ladyfriends, a chap with a Nikon with a tripod and long lens, and a blonde moptop who wouldn’t shut up (me!)… We made it to the gate after the main display was over, to see the Edwardians going up tiddly up up and down diddly um down.

No that’s not the stereo Edixa – but the chap with it saw it, and had a good chat with it’s owner-builder. I missed it myself, or I’d have done the same! The Edixa was porpoise built, and looks like this:

Some bit of kit…

I didn’t get as far as a chat with the long lens brigade – sorry chaps! – though I might have seen Manonthefence stood onacamper again, and Septic can’t have been far from us when he took the pic’s posted of the Bleriot (we were leant on the gate – oo ar!). Good place for spotting odd cameras too – a Stereo Edixa my top spot

Hey…I was leaning on the gate…my fav spot at the moment.. 😀

Caught a snap of this…is it the ‘Stereo Edixa’?

No not me, I had two large Canons and a flourescent vest.

You mean like Jordan on a bicycle? 😀

Ah, we probably spotted you on t’other side of the fence then. As OW virgins we found the flightline tour fabulous – and could happily have snapped away with the Brownie from the fence all day, I can’t get over how close the flightline is!

Neil

No, there’s only one of me and I can’t afford a Leica!

Nick, that wasn’t you clutching the Edixa was it? If so, you stopped and had a chat!

, and the three transvestites with old cameras (allegedly a Leica – didn’t spot that, but did see a Pentacon) raised a smile.

Well Gents, what can I say except

WHY THE BLEEDIN’ HECK HAS IT TAKEN ME THIS LONG?

I last went to an airshow at the Duxford Spitfire one with the hideous problems getting off the field. Three hours stationary in a car on a hot day – sod that again! But yesterday…

Straight in… the right crowd and no crowding… It was just great – and the flightline tour for £4 – gods, if I hadn’t seen anything else that would have been worth it alone! Some of my film is washing as I write this – as soon as I get them developed, I’ll get some of my Box Brownie prints up on the piccy forum. No crowding, no pushing, no shoving, lots of space for everyone… You name it, it had it! And I haven’t even mentioned the line up yet.

I didn’t get as far as a chat with the long lens brigade – sorry chaps! – though I might have seen Manonthefence stood onacamper again, and Septic can’t have been far from us when he took the pic’s posted of the Bleriot (we were leant on the gate – oo ar!). I don’t think it’s worth me saying anything about the line up ‘cos anyone who knows anything knows all the wonders Old Warden has. Suffice to say it was great – my cheeks hurt, I’d grinned so much! A fabulous day out!

Thanks for the tips everyone, and yes, that was the route we’d planned Kev – the extra landmarks came in VERY handy! It’s just a trifle rustic out there…

Thanks Kev!

I’m pretty sure that’s the route I found on the map, so the extra landmarks will be a great help.

Adrian.

If you come over Junction 13 of the M1 follow the signs for Bedford. You need to be on that road for about seven to eight miles. You will pass a huge warehouse estate with a roundabout which has a statue of birds on it. Keep going until you see the exit marked Shefford. You will see the Cardington sheds to your right just before you reach the exit. Up the slip road, right at the island for Cardington. Down a hill and turn left at the bottom. Turn right at the end past the Church on the left and the Cemetery on the right. (The entrance to the Cemetery has large conifer trees either side. The R101 Tomb is just inside the gate to the right.) Carry on through the village and turn right at the T Junction. There is a huge pub on your left. Follow the lane, there are ditches all along to the left. You will come to a left hand bend with a left turn to Old Warden. It is signed but easy to miss if travelling too fast. Follow the road to the village and there you are.

Hope that helps.

M’sieur JDK, my complexion matched the runway when I saw your pics from Hairyplane’s Maggie. You lucky lucky lucky……………………………………

Indeed. But Nice Mr Hairy was repaying a debt he thought greater than I did. Of course, I had to accept, just to make him happy 😀 Do the work, wash the planes, you never know…

Of course if you do say hello you automatically become a member of the clique. Even if it’s just to one member.

i shall not be there, sorry gents. Being a poor student now I cannot afford the luxuries of fuel etc, so have a nice time and don’t forget to put some dirt on the aircraft – especially in those hard to reach places.

I suspect the usual suspects will be there, if you see us do say hello. Better still say hello by buying beer!

Oh and get there as early as you can to soak up the atmosphere.

There’s a lot of memorabilia in the Cardington Church. You probably won’t have daylight in October, but there will be a next time…

This is what they look like from the air. My one and only flight from Old Warden, many thanks to Hairyplane for the Maggie ride, a lifetime ambition fulfilled.
