The actions of Grumman in demanding payment for the use of the names such as Wildcat and Avenger were a bit dubious, and looked a bit like ideas dreamed up by company lawyers, acting to justify their salaries. I don’t think that their policy has been tested in the courts because the software developers, when faced with potentially expensive legal actions, have paid up.

Regarding the Russian plans, I’d rather get them from a magazine. Unfortunately, the magazine copyright usually prohibits me from scanning them into my computer, which is not very useful when I am building a 3D model. Any chance of modifying the copyright blurb to allow the use of your printed plans in 3D modelling JDK?

Best wishes

No problem – they’re there and nice for modellers, artists and enthusiasts generally. There is a problem with copyright in historic aviation. Recently, development of the very popular combat flight simulation IL-2 Sturmovic ‘Forgotten Battles’ and ‘Pacific Air War’ was interupted because Grumman hadn’t been approached for the necessary permissions or payments (?) in respect of the use of aeroplane names like Wildcat, Hellcat and Avenger.

Sorry chum; we do appreciate the thought! Stocks of digitised plans/drawings are pretty rare on the web. I hadn’t considered the copyright issue, but then this is the Internet, so it’s to be expected if not condoned.

Oh dear, squished and now plagiarised…

That went down like an unmentionable object in a punch bowl didn’t it?

…gets coat, slinks quietly away…

Word of warning; I went to use some of the Spitfire plans several weeks ago and found the majority to be somewhat “squished” looking. I think at least some are simply artists impressions of plans.
