Furys or Furies?

Hi,

Ok, silly question time.

What would be the correct plural term for the Hawker Fury? Furys or Furies?

I’ve seen it written both ways. The same would apply to Ospreys or Ospries.

…except there is no ‘C’ in Fury. If I was your teacher, I would be furious with you! 😡

That’s the point.

I comes first then. If there was a C in the word fury, then E would come first–It would be spelled fureis.

When words that end in Y become plural–the Y changes to I and you add ES.

I’m with you Janie. It is a noun so it is just an s at the end.
And I think one of me let alone 5 is more than enough!

JDK surely a navy Frogfoot would be a Frogflipper?

Perhaps the plural for three Su25 Frogfoots should be a Frogyard?

Editted to add: And “mosquitoes” is definitely something you’d see a doctor about….. (…sound of door closing.)

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!
All wrong!

Fury is a proper noun – a name given to an item. It has different rules. The rules you quote are correct, except when referring to proper nouns.

E.g. You could have one Gary and five Garys, but not five Garies!!!

So Fury definitely becomes Furys

Mosquito definitely becomes Mosquitos, unless you are talking about insects.

A proper noun is a noun which names a specific person, place, or thing. Proper nouns are capitalised.

Ok, I’ll go with Furies.

So if Mosquito is Mosquitoes, does that mean Tornado is Tornadoes?
What other names cause confusion?

It’s a question!

Good replies folks.

For what it’s worth, I’ve personally never liked the ‘Fury MkIs’ approach, and try to avoid it when writing. It implies the existance of the Fury Mk.I type ‘s’. Keep the plural to the name, rather than the designation.

Cheers [Plural of cheer 😉 ]

Yep, I’ve also never liked the Fury Mk.1’s approach, especially when it comes in one wing low! :diablo:
