Just read the new Flypast mag, and theres an interesting article about the cold war exhibition at Cosford. The models used to illustrate the exhibition were interesting, as the Twin Pin, Canberra and Valiant were in different colours. Are there actually any plans to repaint these aircraft into the colours of the models (RAF Transport command for the Twin Pin, grey/green for the Valiant and Hemp for the Canberra), or is that just the colour the models they already had were in? Cheers, Rob

Yep, the Varsity’s i know of undercover are Newark at the moment, and when Cosford is completed the Varsity there in a hangar and when Airspace is completed theirs being restored, i believe the Victor and Varsity are first up to be restored.

It’ll be three Varsitys under cover with the Duxford one being restored at Airspace when it opens.
Did you include this one at Newark? 40 years on since I last worked on a starboard engine, photo by Dave Bloomfield.

They sure are huge inside, i remember going inside the Cov one many years back and couldn’t believe how big it was, if you think it looks big from the outside wait until you get inside it!

The Argosy is not huge
Depends on how close you are standing to it!

Yep, Belfast is one of the central aircraft in the Transport command section. Although a lot of people are criticising the new building, personally i think it’s a great idea, and it will give more views of the aircraft than of them in a hangar.
When your only 5 foot 5, an Argosy IS huge, hehe. I really like the whistling wheelbarrow, so i’ll be glad to see her undercover, if only the Midland Air Museum and East Midlands Aeropark one could be brought undercover one day.
Cheers for telling me about the Comet, didn’t know she was around, must pay her a visit sometime, love Comets 😀

G-APYD Comet 4B ex Dan Air I believe!
The Argosy is not huge, bit larger than a Varsity I would guess, the Belfast is getting inside Cosford too!

Nope was on about Comets in general, as the Duxford one is currently outside, but due to go back in. Didn’t realise there was a Comet at Wroughton, which one is this? It’ll be three Varsitys under cover with the Duxford one being restored at Airspace when it opens. Will be interesting to see an Argosy undercover, they are huge aircraft!

Haha, that would be interesting, would make them all look the same to the average punter though.
Interesting to see they plan to bring the Argosy, Comet, Andover and Varsity inside, that’ll be two Varsitys under cover and the only Comet and Argosy, at least at the moment for the Comet
Are you on about a specific Comet mark? as there are/were also Comet’s hangered at Duxford and Wroughton.
Great to see 2 Varsitys undercover and the Argosy.

No you’re all quite right, but I just think one in camo would look fab!
Well I can dream!
Cheers then

TT,
From what I am aware, politics is stopping this from taking place. but I think (both) of these a/c look wonderful in test-bed scheme.
The ‘politics’ in question is that a National Collection isn’t going to paint an aircraft into a fantasy scheme, which I don’t think we can really be surprised about!
Yes, there are lots of aircraft in inaccurate or inappropriate schemes, but that’s not pure, deliberate fantasy.
For the record though, I agree with TT, and I’d particularly love to see a TSR-2 in RAAF Colours! Many years ago I did a couple of monochrome pen profiles of an Iraqi and an RAF TSR-2s. 😀

Paint all three anti-flash white!! :diablo:
Y E A H !!!!!!!!!!!!!
How long has it been since all three were seen together in that scheme – right at the height of the Cold War.

Yep you right about the V bomber colour schemes, exactly what i’ve been thinking! My guess is they already had the models, but wondered if their might have been other plans.
By: Will J - 6th September 2005 at 17:40
It would be odd if the Valiant was to be repainted in a green/grey scheme, as the current schmes worn by the three V-bombers to be included in the display…
Valiant -Anti Flash White
Vulcan- Green/grey camo
Victor- Hemp
… nicely represent the three main phases of the ‘V-bomber story’, nuclear bomber, conventional bomber and finally tanker. My guess is that these were just models conveniently found to illustrate the shapes of the aircraft involved, unless somebody else knows better…?
