The Ashes & Messerschmitts.

From the BBC website, reflecting on the final Ashes test this weekend:

“Aussie great Keith Miller, a World War II fighter pilot, argued that real pressure was having a Messerschmitt on your tail.”

It really does show a difference between sport and war. Any other comments like this?

(PS Anyone wishing to discuss the Ashes, England or Australia’s chances, there’s a thread on the General Discussion forum here )

Re: My 1st XI

Sorry about the time delay, was waiting to see if Moggy was switched on 😀

OK, the eleven listed below were the first alphabetical entries in Kenneth Wynn’s book “A Clasp For The Few”” detailing the 129 Kiwis (both RAF and RNZAF) that qualified for the Battle of Britain Clasp.

I have included a very brief bio from the book.

Allen J H L – Fg Off 151 Sqn, MiA 12th July 1940.
Andrews M R – Sgt (AG) 264 Sqn.
Baird G M – Plt Off 248 Sqn.
Bary R E – Plt Off 229 Sqn, KiA 17th April 1945.
Bayly J – Sgt 111 Sqn.
Bennison A – Sgt (AG) 25 Sqn.
Bickerdike J L – Plt Off 85 Sqn, KiFA 22nd July 1940.
Blake M V – Flt Lt 238 & 234 Sqn, PoW 19th August 1942.
Brennan J S – Sgt (AG) 23 Sqn, KiFA 21st August 1940.
Brinsden F N – Fg Off 19 Sqn.
Brookman R W – Sgt (O) 235 Sqn, MiA 22nd February 1943.

JDK,

This link doesn’t answer your question about the RAAF team , but might be of interest – http://www.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/1940S/1945/AUST-SVCS_IN_ENG/

Sorry – back on topic…

There is a story about Keith Miller here – with the actual quote
http://www.defence.gov.au/news/raafnews/editions/4619/history/story01.htm

PS I don’t see it publicly, but there is a picture of 609 Squadron pilots having a knock-about in front of Sq Ldr Robinson’s Spitfire “The London Butcher” somewhere. It’s in one of the the Osprey “Spitfire Aces” books.

PS – South Island won…booo!

The captain is between the bats, sitting. If any cricket afficianados recognise him I’d like to know more please

Macfire – were all those cricketers killed in the war? (Guess)

Of Cricket and Air Force matters

Slightly related… here are photos from the late Roy Paton’s collection.

RNZAF personnel based at Piva in the Pacific, then servicing Corsairs. Divided into North Island vs South Island teams, playing on the actual air strip. Must have been hot I reckon. Second photo is the North island team. The captain actually played prewar for New Zealand (and postwar I think) but I forget who he was (Roy did tell me, but it was just a name to me).

Roy himself is on the far right, standing.

Hmmm. Dunno.

But the Test Match Special team have just mentioned someone’s sent in a scorecard of an RAAF 11 playing an England team (didn’t quite catch who – anyone?) in Birmingham in 1946. Wonder who was in that game?

Almost on topic, is there anyone out there besides me who recalls a play broadcast on the BBC in the early seventies or late sixties which was “set” (if you can call it that) at a cricket match while at the same time discussing the Battle of Britain? It was in a pretty empty studio, featured just two actors dressed in cricket whites who played all the parts. One piece I can recall clearly was the guy who was about to bowl saying “My ‘plane is a Messerschmitt 109 E-3” and then cut to the batsman who said in an oxford drawl “The kite I’m flying is a Supermarine Spitfire Mark 1a”. I seem to think the batsman played a sweep shot which symobolised something.

Cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. I do also remember the on-screen romance between the RAF pilot and a girl who was of course played by the other bloke. The screen kiss was a bit much for the assembled family and was watched in pretty embarrassed silence. 🙂

Anyone else?

Well

The fat lady she no singzzzzzzzz yit

Lets wait to crow till about Tuesday I think chaps – in any case it has to end someday. Eight series in a row is something and as with our Rugby it is probably time for a rebuild

It wouldn’t hurt everybody to stop and watch Shane Warne – Trust me you will never see the like of him again on any side – If we win , lose or draw it doesn’t matter – he may be a seriously flawed person but he is a genuine LEGEND of the Game,

W/C Bader, whilst attempting to knock the hun for six found himself on a bit of a sticky wicket.

As his aircraft plummeted he was leg left behind (rather than leg before) and the aircraft almost certainly had some spin on it. Inevitably he was out for the duration.

But luckily he was later given bail from Colditz
