Avia B.122. Magic Aerobatic aircraft of the 1930's

Seem’s it was quiet an amazing aircraft for it’s day ๐Ÿ˜ฎ .

Described as One of the finest aerobatic aircraft of the 1930’s ๐Ÿ˜Ž .

Looking through it’s list of Rally meeting’s and stuff, I must say it WAS an impressive aircraft ๐Ÿ™‚ .

The outstanding aerobatic pilot Frantisek Novak, flew OK-AVE to 4th place.
Vincennes Rally, June 1934.

Also Novak, encouraged by the B. 122 designer, formed a top line Aerobatic team.

Novak, Siroky and Hubacek. taking out 2nd and 3rd , 1936 Berlin Olympic’s contest.

Top 3 for there class Zurich meeting July 1937.

There is more of course, but time now for some other’s outthere to join in I think ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

Last bit, 3 Variants.

Avia B.222,

Avia B.322

Avia Ba.422,……..Ba.442.2 gave a brilliant exhibition, piloted by Novak, at the aerobatic display held at St Germain-en-Laye in France during July 1938.

DO any survive at all, …..maybe in flying condition.

NONE of my book’s have a picture ๐Ÿ™ , so it’s over to you Lady’s and Gent’s now ๐Ÿ™‚ .

May nic one off google, but if you have one hint hint  , please post it ๐Ÿ™‚ .

Please discuss ๐Ÿ˜‰

No worrie’s Papa mate!

Just keep enjoying it! Peter.

GAS mate, I think I may know the plane you speak of, Ca 164, but I think there is another Itie job, that is almost a twin of a DH-60, seen a story on one a while back somewhere, but have forgotten what type it was..

Is this the one that looks a bit like a Italian DH 60?

Yep. That Avia looks nice.

I think the Italian DH60 look-alike is a Caproni of some kind. Anyone with wider knowledge of such things able to produce a piccie?

Sorry, Phil, I am terribly busy with translation work at the moment and hardly have time to cram in some aerobatic flying this weekend in Stockholm (hope the weather holds), never mind looking at pictures, although I hope to have some of my own to put up next week! (Here I go, bragging again!)
The Forum must take second place just now!

That is a Damn shame Jan, quiet a nice looking aircraft.

Papa Lima, have you seen these pictures yet old mate.

You too Papa. may have a request from Jans amazing collection.

Jan anymore picture’s of the Ba-122 or like would do nicely if you have more mate.

To do another type of aircraft I think we should start a seperate thread.

I think, most of the factory plans do still exist, but it would be necessary
to recalculate the entire airplane according to the current rules. It would take
a long time to do this. The czech CAA is very strict(is called somethink like
“Aviation Subduing Authority” among pilots), so it would be necessary to
build the replica in some other country.
There are several more problems – e.g. I do not know if there exists a suitable
engine.

Flying capabilities of the machine – flying the positive maneuvers could be really nice.
Vertical maneuvers would be probably limited by a high drag.
By the inverted maneuvers it probably never could beat planes with symetrical airfoil like Zlin Z-50, Extra 300, SU-26…
If I compare the mass/power ratio:
-720kg/221kW = 3.25 (Z-50)
– 920kg/295kW = 3.1 (Su-31)
-1080kg/317kw = 3.4 (Ba-122)
– 830kg/95kW = 8.7 (Tiger Moth)

Please note, the airplane has been designed more than 70 years ago. In that time it was probably one of the best aerobatic designs in the world. Since that time many things changed.
If I consider the effort to build a single piece of this airplane fully airworthy
and the maitenance/flying costs, I do not believe somebody is gonna build it again…

I really do hope some day soon another Ba-122 will fly again, seem’s a much too beautiful plane not to up in the air doing what she was built for.

Very nice indeed, and sound’s like it may have rivaled, even some of today’s great aerobatic plane’s.

What do you think Jan, a flyer ever possible mate ??

Pilot Novak, Siroky, Hubacek & Avia Ba-122

Here are some pictures scanned from my archive.
Those are photos of great men who flew this wonderfull
machines many years ago, photos of fabulous Frantisek Novak’s
aerobatic team.

“The outstanding aerobatic pilot Frantisek Novak,
flew OK-AVE to 4th place. Vincennes Rally, June 1934.
Also Novak, encouraged by the B. 122 designer, formed a top line
aerobatic team. Novak, Siroky and Hubacek taking out 2nd and 3rd ,
1936 Berlin Olympic’s contest.
Top 3 for there class Zurich meeting July 1937.” (see Stormbird’s note above)

The pictures below were mostly taken at Plzen(Pilsen), May 10th 1936
at old Plzen-Bory airfield (1911-cca 1960, a university has been build there later).
I personaly met the Mr. Hubacek many times, I was a joung
boy at the moment.
He was really a gentle and modest man, friend of my grandfather.
Several years later, after he died, I have found he was “the famous Hubacek”…
Pictures:
272: Novak
273: Novak, Siroky
274: Hubacek
277: Novak, Siroky, Hubacek with president Benes
278_2: Novak + his own signature

I have a model of the Ba.422 in 1/72 by RS Models of the Czech Republic. A nice looking resin model, looking at this thread might just have moved it up the build pile!

They also do a Ba.122 and Ba.222.

For some nice pics of these models built up, follow this link…
