Request for those going to OW tomorrow.

This is going to sound really stupid, but, can any of you draw? I need a picture on A4 of the badge of the Air Transport Auxiliary. I need this by Tuesday at the latest so I can laminate it to act as the centre piece for the poppy wreath I am laying at Manchester on Wednesday. Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi Kev,
If you have an ATA headstone not too far away you could perhaps take a big piece of paper and a crayon and do a rubbing, then maybe trace the rubbing through onto another piece of paper?
I’ll have a crack at drawing an ATA badge for you tonight, and if it turns out anything like half decent I’ll bring it along to OW. It’s short notice though,so I can’t garauntee a masterpiece!:D

Thanks Papa Lima. I was hoping for the badge as depicted on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.

I am in contact with the ATA association as well. Was hust hoping for a centre piece for the wreath. The British Legion do have a badge service but do not have the badge for the ATA.

Seafuryfan.

Thanks for that. I will forward your design to the ATA Association for their consideration.

My Guess

Hello Kev,

I don’t know what the actual ATA badge looks like, so I won’t be much help, but here is my submission anyway, sketched in about 5 minutes.

It shows a Spitfire about to enter CBs, showing the determination of the female pilot (hence curly hair, although I know there were gentlemen ATAs as well) to deliver it come what may.

My Latins not too hot, so I have made up a motto, ‘Precipitus et Alboratum Brutus’. I don’t know what this means, but it sounds a bit Shakespeare, so there’s a bit of extra ‘drama’ for the badge.

Joking aside, I wish you well with your wreath laying, and for thinking of the important contribution the men and women of the ATA made to the war effort.

Have you tried contacting this web site?

All you need really is a printout of the badge – drawing shouldn’t really be necessary.
Good luck, anyway – if I can find a copy of the badge I’ll let you know.
