Hi Dave

Clear as mud mate but I understand your position – I won’t take the wind out of CW’s sails though – just to say I think we both have the same info here and we both hope the deals are done .

Folks

Lots of rumours going around, some true some not ( or as they say I can neither confirm or deny). Negotiations are still underway in several cases and there has been more than one change of mind. Needless to say when we are allowed to report we will… confirmation of at least two by the time the next Classic Wings is out ..I hope 😉

Dave

Great Link Turbo(Chris), Most interesting!!!.

Ah, THAT Seafury, was sitting behind her all the last Sunday, of last Avalon Show.

Had a great YAK with the pilot, and his misse’s too(She gave me a VIP pass to get in with the real money people there!, and I got to YAK with even more pilot’s)

THAT BABY JUST PURR’S, I was most impressed with the Seafury.

Ok. I did like Oscar’s plane too!, another one nicked from N.Z. Too!

Just hope the Fury stay’s here!!!!

The Centaurus was also used in the mighty Brabazon, the Brigand, Ambassador, Blackburn Firebrand, Beverley and Vickers Warwick.

Good bit of discussion here about the Centaurus:

Yes DHFAN

And the Centaurus was alos used from memory on the Beverly so it must have proven reliable in that instance over long ranges/hours – any coments from resident experts on that?

I think you’re about right there John.

They were used on airliners, presumably a different model, but I can’t see them passing a civil type test if there were any fundamental problems. Offhand, I can only think of the Ambassador that used them but I seem to recall there were a few others planned until turboprops took over.
Spares shortage and I imagine equally important, very little current knowledge and expertise.

The Centaurus has a REPUTATION for being a bit unreliable and there is a spares shortage which doesn’t help but in truth I think it is fine given proper maintaince and operational perameters being followed. In the US they have the ability to use the reliable and slightly more available 3350 Yank Tank engine which is relatively cheaper than overhauling a Centaurus and the expertise is there wheras the Centaurus is a real odd bod engine in the US and nobody wants to know much about it.

My opinion

When it was displayed I was blown away by the sheer power and speed of the Sea Fury. It made the Corsair and P-51D look positively slow with those high-speed passes at Wanaka. Well I know it is quicker, but it just seemed to be a heck of a lot quicker !!

Long runs with the engine at a consistent operating temperature would definitely help it you would think, so yes I share your opinion there.
Are the Centaurus donks normally quite temperamental ?

Turbo

And thanks very much for your Sea Fury – I try to catch up with it here at Archerfield once or twice a month and very nice she is too and no major trouble with the donk since she got here years back – it seems to fly a lot and over long distances which may be the secret to keeping the engine in good condition? – we will soon have 3 or 4 Centaurus powered airworthy machines flying here which is probably the most anywhere – I wish the RANFAAM one would get going to add to the mix but I think they are still busy tryng to get/decide to get the Firefly going again

Hey John

It’s been a while since we’ve heard the awesome sound of the Centaurus.
I think the last one was the Bagdhad Fury.

As much as I like this, I’d love to see an A-1/AD Spad, something I don’t think has ever been here before.

Cheers

I forgot earlier

Whilst in Blighty recently I heard more stories about a Sea Fury going to NZ again I hope this one is true as I think it would be good for you guys to have one again – anybody over there heard about it – There was a previous rummor last year but the money didn’t work out apparently.
